Speed, Velocity, Acceleration Notes

Speed (Distance ÷ time)

Speed is the distance traveled by a moving object in a certain amount of time. Speed affects the energy of an object. The faster it moves, the more kinetic energy it has Average speed = total distance ÷ total time Constant speed= speed that doesn’t change

Acceleration (Net force ÷ mass)

Acceleration is the change in speed and/ or direction of an object’s motion. Starting Stopping Speeding up Slowing down Changing direction Acceleration = net force/ mass http://www.harcourtschool.com/activit y/newton/ http://www.harcourtschool.com/activit y/newton/

Velocity (speed + direction)

Velocity is a speed in a given direction. For example: – 35 mph North – 45 m/s South (Velocity is similar to speed, but it gives the direction)

A change In position measured by distance and time. Anything moving is in motion! FRICTION – is a force that opposes motion Caused by water, wind, surface texture SMOOTH = LESS FRICTION ROUGH = MORE FRICTION

Distance is how far you have traveled Distance = Speed X Time For Example: If you drove 3 miles/second for 10 seconds your distance is 30 miles
