1 New Product Launch Digital Earth Clamp-on Testers DET14C and DET24C Paul Swinerd – Power Product Portfolio Manager

2 Presentation Agenda The New DET14C and DET24C brief introduction What do they do and how? Interpreting results and applications Common customer key issues answered by DET14/24C Improvements over DET10/20C Key Customer Benefits Users

3 The New DET14/24C Introduction Replaces current DET10C and DET20C Utilising the latest technologies Designed and manufactured at Dover, England Design registered Many new unique features Real user benefits

4 DET14C and DET24C – What do they do and how? Typical earth system (Representative – in some countries bonding electrode system to water pipe is prohibited)

5 DET14C and DET24C What do they do and how? Equivalent circuit of previous slide (colour coded)

6 DET14C and DET24C What do they do and how?

7 Interpreting results and applications Following slides provide good summary Full application note available on Megger website –DET14_DET24_an_V_01.pdf

8 Two golden rules of Stake-less testing 1.There must be a loop resistance to measure. –There must be a series-parallel resistance path, and the lower the better! The more electrodes or earth paths in the system the nearer the measurement gets to the actual electrode under test true earth resistance. –If there isn’t a loop to measure you could create one with a temporary jumper lead. 2.The earth path must be in the circuit to measure earth resistance. –Sounds obvious, but if you have metal structures involved there may be a connection through that, rather than the earth mass. –Of course you may want to verify a connection, that’s fine, but be sure you are testing what you think you are testing.

9 Stake-less test results More parallel paths in series – the closer the reading is to true electrode resistance

10 Stake-less test results Always easy to identify poor electrode

11 Example applications – Pole mounted transformers Many parallel paths to earth Measurements will be close to true electrode earth resistance

12 Example applications – Service entrance or meter Many parallel paths to earth Measurements will be close to true electrode earth resistance

13 Example applications – Lightning protection Good access is important

14 Example applications – Lightning protection Ideal to replace 2 pole method

15 Example applications – Primary cross-connection points Picture on right is cable TV

16 Example applications – Remote switching site Checking continuity

17 Example applications – Cellular sites/microwave and radio tower Checking continuity

18 Example applications – Telephone pedestal

19 Example applications – Pad mounted transformers Checking individual electrode earth resistance or continuity to earth mat

20 Example applications - switchyard / substation earth Continuity to earth mat Lots of induced currents

21 Example applications - substation metal fence Checking continuity to earth mats Again, can be induced currents flowing

22 Common user key issues Safety Appropriate CAT rating Remembering to check if current is flowing before disconnecting electrode Reliability Interlocking teeth bending Poor battery life Dirt / cobwebs getting on jaw mating surfaces Taking measurements in noisy locations Access Access to electrodes in pits Getting jaw under tapes / cables on walls Problems clamping large cables and tapes Ease of use Difficult to read display Operating jaw in difficult locations Operating hold button in difficult locations Identifying stored test results Producing reports How does the new DET14C and DET24C address these issues?

23 Safety CATIV 600V rated Highest level of safety available CATIV means it may be used before the distribution board 600V refers to the phase to earth voltage of the system Automatic current measurement safety feature Even in resistance range In addition there’s a separate current measuring range –0.5mA to 35A –Used to check if it is safe to disconnect electrode –Earth leakage testing

24 Reliability No teeth to bend Easy to clean DET10C DET14C

25 Reliability Extremely high battery life –DET10C and DET20C 7 hours continuous at 25Ω load –DET14C and DET24C 24 hours continuous at 25 Ω load Will take measurements in noisy locations Automatic noise filter function

26 Access Easier access to electrodes in pits

27 Access Easier to get jaw under tapes / cables on walls Clamps large cables and tapes

28 Ease of use Easy and comfortable to operate clamp with four finger grip Can grip the bottom of the unit and open clamp with your thumb where space is restricted Strong, adjustable wrist strap prevents costly instrument repair if instrument slips out of ones hand Photo: Beta testing in a substation

29 Ease of use Advanced test result storage and management Time and date stamp stored test results Pressing the save key (  ) will record a result, data is saved in either resistance (Ω) or current (A) modes. Test results may be reviewed on screen together with time and date the test was made Easy to use arrow buttons to navigate test results Delete a single result or delete all results DET24C only: –Data easily downloaded via IrDA-to-isolated USB port –Supplied with PowerDB Lite –PowerDB campatible

30 Ease of use Easy to read display in low light –White backlit display Large 4-digit main display Secondary 6-digit display for –Time and date information –Stored result index

31 Ease of use In addition to normal display hold function the instruments features a new pre-test hold function Fast testing to test limits Alarm limit function –Easy to enable –Can be set for resistance and current limits. –Current limit function is an important new and unique safety feature –Easy to set test minimum and maximum limits –If limits are exceeded the instrument provides both audible and visual indication

32 Many improvements over DET10C and DET20C

33 The key features in summary 1.CATIV 600V Safety with auto-current limit warning 2.Elliptical, slim profile, clamp shape 3.Flat jaw interface 4.High battery life (AA, LR6) 5.Backlit display 6.Automatic noise filter function 7.Advanced memory functionality (date and time stamped) 8.Pre-test hold function
