8 What is IMLS?  Who are we? IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 35,000 museums.  What do we do? We make grants, convene groups, conduct research, and publish in order to build the capacity of museums and libraries to serve the public.

11 IMLS Budget and Authorization  The FY 2015 IMLS budget is $227.8 million.  IMLS was authorized in 1996 by the Museum and Library Services Act. The act includes: – Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) – Museum Services Act (MSA) Reauthorized in 2003 and 2010

14 Grants to States $154,848,000  Every year each state library administrative agency receives a population-based formula grant.  The grant is distributed in accordance with approved five-year plan.  Each state is required to evaluate its success at meeting the goals of its five-year plan
