Blended settings provide effective PBL opportunities Dr. Christine Sabieh, Professor Notre Dame University TESOL 2016 – CALL-IS, Baltimore Panel on Project-Based Learning: Pedagogical Possibilities for Online, Mobile, and Blended Learning

To show that… When students are given projects to carry out to assess integration of concept understanding and language communication, learning opportunities are diversified

To conclude that … The integration of PBL in blended learning settings is recommended

The marriage: The givens Pedagogical flexibility Problem based learning Blended learning Hybrid course planning: > 20% Usually create 75-80% - PBL w/in units This time 50% - 1 PBL case – multilevel research endeavor Authentic learning environment Real life content knowledge application To create the personalized student learning opportunity PBL promotes

T/L ambiance Student-centered Critical thinking Thinking strategies – brainstorming in ENL Student control responsibility - time, place, path, pace of learning Authentic learning - grounding in real-life situations  Integrating own personal experience as explore, discuss, construct concepts & create relationships in contexts  Real life content knowledge application -- examples of language use in real life contexts

Planning my PBL experience By the end of the semester, the learners will be able to communicate using the English language a. Identify, through readings, four or more impacts of technology on the total school environment b. Identify, through readings, eight or more issues (current and past) related to the integration of technology and education and their effects in the field c. Discuss the impacts and issues as a means to advocate a research based position related to the use of technology in education (position may be positive or negative) through discussion forums d. Carry out field research on issues or impacts, and write up and/or present arguments using APA format e. dentify, through reading, strategies related to the integration of technology into the educational set up. f. Practice problem solving, through individual or collaboration with others, and trying out different strategies to use in classroom activities, the lesson planning or curriculum. g. Present lesson plans, online, to show the different use of the strategies in class, considering age. h. Present a curriculum page, online, on one topic in a school curriculum. i. Present, for critical evaluation, one lesson plan and curriculum page during a class seminar, and call upon the participants to role play the part of actual students in the intended school grade. ….. Consider learning goals, course objectives, content, & resources, create … online activities that engage students complement face-to-face activities plan for interactivity rather than delivery

PBL endeavor See Content – resource reading Discussion – create a sense of community face-to-face & online discussion forums PBL – engage students with real life dilemma Interact w/ content, w/ tools, w/ other students Collaborate - assume responsibility to interact together or w self Adopt the education space you work in Using ENL LANG (& APA)to communicate … 1.Identify issues and effects 2.Position self 3.Draw on unit topics 4.Create tool to collect data 5.Address each unit, collect data, analyze, conclude 6.Recommend additions needed, modifications, & / or changes 7.Write up one final case

My blended learning space Provide detailed syllabus - keeps instructor /sts organized & focused on task Determine activities online or face-to- face Determine timetable for face-to-face vs online Emphasize activities rather than content Face to face: lectures & facilitated class discuss, debates & presentations Do assignments or research data collection based on the classroom activities – online or other; individual, pair or group post to asynchronous discussion forums for online discussion Set up: meet with the class face-to-face 90% of time + extended period of time for online work  Blending and mixing pedagogical modes of learning: activities reinforce, complement, & elaborate one another NOT an add-on or duplicate of what is taught in the classroom Effective communication is key to success of blend

Content Unit 1: Digital divide Unit 2: Distance learning Unit 3: Online support Unit 4: Software, multimedia & education Unit 5: Technology integration Unit 6: Curriculum integration Unit 7: Curriculum planning Unit 8: Age and level of material & equipment accommodation Unit 9: Production of material Unit 10: Ethics in the work place Unit 11: Computer ethics & issues related to ethics Unit 12: Policy making

Participants Graduate students: 7 Language of instruction: English Course: 15 weeks; on ave 3 hrs meeting face to face/week Blended – 50% hybrid course – Technology & Education Blackboard learning management system Platform Blackboard Learn & Blackboard Mobile Apps

Conclusion Recommend PBL in blended learning spaces Outcome: communicated how to create effective customized spaces of tech enhance learning PROBLEM  Solution  communicated this using English language
