10 HW 1 smART P500 Protective relay core consists of a DSP (CPU Digital Signal Processing). It performs Measurement and Protection algorithms as well as Data Storage and Communications. A FPGA supports the DSP, by controlling Analog Signal Acquisition, I/O ports, keyboard, display and LEDs, IRIG-B decoding and part of the basic algorithms for protection functions.

11 HW 2 smART P500 In addition to the protection core consisting of DSP-FPGA dual management, it also features the following items: FLASH Memory. It contains the O.S. (Firmware) of the protection, the settings, and historical stored data. Flash Memory keeps all data stored in it whether the relay is powered or not. It also permits the modification of its stored data. Therefore, OS can be updated without any HW change. SRAM Memory. It stores time variable information. A lithium battery avoids data loss, in case of shutdown or no power supply.

12 HW 2 smART P500 DRAM Memory. It stores dynamic data, not critical to protection relay operation. These data are loss in case of no Power Supply. QUART. A 4 x serial port control chipset. It allows the management of up to 4 serial ports simultaneously. Analog Input signals Acquisition system. Consisting of the analog inputs themselves, and a set of amplifying filters managing the signals prior to A/D conversion. After conversion, signals are translated into digital samples (128 samples/cycle) and processed by the DSP.
