3. Characterization Characterization is the way that the author shows the character’s personality There are two types of characterization Shows vs. Tells 1.Indirect 2.Direct

4. Direct Characterization The author TELLS the reader directly what the character’s personality is Example: “He is strong enough to handle the work in the mines, he is strong, and he can hunt.”

5. Indirect Characterization The author gives the reader clues that lets them find out the personality of a character by themselves Example: “I reach her just as she is about to climb the steps. With one sweep of the arm I push her behind me. “I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute!”

6. How to know if it is Indirect… ***Remember STEAL Speech: What does the character say? Thoughts: What is shown through the character’s thoughts and feelings? Effect: How do people feel about this character? Actions: What does the character do? How does the character behave? Looks: How does the character dress, what do they look like?

Vocabulary terms to remember -Protagonist: The main character in the story -Antagonist: The character that works against the protagonist in the story -Flat Character: A character that doesn’t develop in the story, has one quality -Round Character: The character is fully developed, the author shows good things and bad things about the character -Dynamic Character: A character that develops and learns from their actions -Static Character: A character that stays the same, does not change -Inference: Using what you already know and adding what you learned to create a new thought or idea
