Empires  When a society conquers another group of people and they become united under the conqueror’s government.  An empire brings different peoples of formerly independent states together under the control of one ruler.  Empires bring together cultures. Consequently people, ideas, language and writing systems, technology, government styles, and religions move throughout the world.

Sargon from Akkad  Sargon was born in northern Mesopotamian city-state called Akkad.  As king of Akkad, he organized a strong Akkadian army and attacked the Sumerian cities and created the Sumerian Empire.  He unified the government, language, and writing system. Cultural diffusion brought together the Sumerian and Akkadian cultures.  Sargon’s reign lasted c. 2334 BC – 2279 BC.  Although during his reign the empire became powerful and successful, after his death the Sumerian city-states rebelled and the empire Sargon built fell apart.

Sargon’s Empire

Hammurabi and Babylonia  After Sargon’s rule, other people tried to take over the region and unite it once again.  Around 1790 BC, king Hammurabi from Amorite conquered the region and created an empire.  Hammurabi established the capital Babylon but appointed officials to help him rule.  He collected taxes, executed building projects including irrigation systems, and he instituted business policies that promoted more and successful trade.  Hammurabi also wrote a set of laws to govern his people, the Code of Hammurabi. It included 282 laws on a stone pillar set in a public square. This was the first time a government had posted an organized set of laws for all to see. Copies of the code were also distributed throughout the empire on clay tablets.  Babylonia flourished until after Hammurabi died in c. 1750 BC.

Babylonia

Evaluate these three laws from Hammurabi’s Code. What conclusions can you draw?  If a man puts out another man’s eye, his own eye shall be put out.  If he puts out the eye of another man’s slave, he shall pay one-half the slave’s value.  If someone strikes the body of a man higher in rank, he shall receive sixty blows with an ox whip in public.

This week:  Read your textbooks and lessons to learn about the empires of Mesopotamia and Egypt.
