DO NOW: B-S-S Take out GREEN Electricity WS from Friday. Have NEW Einsteins out on desk WITH YOUR NAME ON THEM!

Today’s Agenda Review Green WS– Add to NB P.103 Magnets in Water Probe Demo Magnetism Notes BRAINPOP!

In ?:B-S-SP.104 1.Complete Magnets in Water quarter sheet. 2.Be sure to have reasoning completed.

Explanation Steve’s is the best selection. Magnets work with or without a medium. They work underwater, through solids, through air (gases), and in space (a vacuum). Just like electricity, magnetism works better in some mediums than others, but will still work underwater.

Magnetism Notes Add to notebook P.105 when completed.

Magnetism Attraction of a magnet for another object

Magnetic Force Look at the picture below, the magnet and the nails are exerting a magnetic force on each other.

Magnetic Force However, the force gets weaker as it goes through the nails, which is why the magnet does not pick up every nail in the bucket.

Magnetic Poles All magnets have magnetic poles. A magnetic pole is one of two points on a magnet that have opposing charges.

Magnets have two poles: North and South

Like poles repel each other and opposites will attract

Magnetic Poles Magnetic forces are GREATEST at the poles. Ex: ends (poles) of magnets will pick up more paperclips than the center

Magnets will attract IRON and STEEL

All magnets create a magnetic field. A magnetic field is the region of magnetic force around a magnet.

Look at the magnets below. The like charges will repel each other before the magnets even touch. This is an example of the magnetic field. The magnetic field extends outwards all around the magnet.

Magnetic fields are represented by field lines. Field lines that are further apart indicate a weaker magnetic field. Field lines that are closer together indicate a strong magnetic field

Magnetism Earth as a Magnet – The Earth’s magnetic field is caused by circulation of molten metal at the Earth’s core. Geographic North vs. Magnetic North

Magnetism Solenoids –> a magnet which is a current – carrying coil of wire with many loops.

Magnetism Electromagnet – is a solenoid with a ferromagnetic core. An electromagnet is a strong magnet that can be turned on and off with a switch.

Magnetism To Increase The Strength of an Electromagnet – a.Increase the current in the solenoid. b.Add more loops to the solenoid. c.Wind the coils of the solenoid closer together. d.Use a stronger ferromagnetic material for a core.

Compass A compass is made of a magnet that is attracted to the Earth’s magnetic field.

Compass A compass will always spin to point North. Since the compass points North, what kind of charge do you think the magnet on the needle has?

Out ?:P.104 Write down 5 facts from the TWO (2) videos we will watch on magnetism.
