3 Unrestricted Submarine Warfare Attacks made by Germany on the ocean that endangered the U.S. trade and lives This brought Americans into World War I

4 Great Migration Movement of African Americans from the South to the North for new opportunities

5 Espionage Act Laws that made it a crime to communicate any information that would interfere with U.S. military operations or aid its enemies

6 Eugene V. Debs A labor leader that was convicted of writing a speech against the military

7 18 th Amendment Prohibited the manufacture, sale or transportation of alcohol

8 19 th Amendment Granted women’s suffrage

9 Fourteen Points A plan introduced by Woodrow Wilson that would help us to avoid future wars

10 League of Nations An international peace keeping organization proposed by President Wilson in the Fourteen Points and America refused to join

11 Communism A single party government ruled by a dictator No private ownership and property is owned by the government

12 Red Scare A fear of communism that spread to the U.S. and led people to suspect communists and socialists

13 Jazz Type of music that originated in New Orleans in the 1920s

14 Harlem Renaissance Movement of African American art, literature and music that took place in New York

15 Langston Hughes African American writer and poet that wrote about the lives of African Americans Was part of the Harlem Renaissance

16 Louis Armstrong A jazz musician during the Harlem Renaissance

17 Tin Pan Alley A musical movement on the rise named after a place in Manhattan

18 Irving Berlin Famous musician in Tin Pan Alley

19 Mass production An industrial process that enabled Henry Ford to make the car affordable for Americans

20 Henry Ford He is the manufacturer of the car who used the assembly line and mass production

21 Stock market crash This was caused when the price of stocks decreased and prices began to fall

22 Great Depression Economic recession in the 1930s that affected all the worlds industrial nations

23 Hoovervilles Shacks and camps of homeless and unemployed people that were set up on the outskirts of town during the Depression Named for Herbert Hoover

24 Dust Bowl An ecological disaster of dry conditions and high winds that made farming impossible because of the eroded soil

25 Tennessee Valley Authority Part of the New Deal that was introduced by Franklin D. Roosevelt Build dams that power plans along the river in order to provide electricity

26 Wagner Act Part of the Second New Deal that established the right of workers to use collective bargaining to get rights for workers It prohibited unfair labor practices of intimidating workers, keeping workers from unionizing and firing union members

27 Labor Union A group of workers who share same trade and work together to improve their benefits and working environment

28 Social Security Act A program created by the New Deal that would provide insurance for people over 65 and for disabled people and their families Part of this is paid for with tax dollars paid by workers

29 Eleanor Roosevelt A former first lady who was interested in humanitarian causes and social progress She was an activist for women and kept the President updated on her observations of social conditions of the time

30 Huey Long A Senator from Louisiana who was the biggest critic of Roosevelt He focused on attempting to replace Roosevelt as President He promised everyone American a home, food, clothes and an education

31 Neutrality Acts A law passed at the beginning of World War II that would keep us out of the conflict It made it illegal to sell arms or make loans to nations at war

32 Court-packing bill A law proposed by Roosevelt that would allow him to increase the size of the Supreme Court and nominate other justices that would support his ideas It was not a popular law at the time

33 A. Phillip Randolph He proposed a march on Washington, D.C. to protest discrimination in the military and in industry

34 Pearl Harbor A Japanese attack on the U.S. during World War II This was the event that brought American from neutrality to engagement into the war

35 Internment camps During World War II there were immigrants or descendants of immigrants from Japan, Germany and Italy that were rounded up and place in specific areas for fear that they might be spies

36 Mobilization Steps taken by the U.S. to prepare to engage in war This included: stockpiling weapons, supplies, blood and the draft

37 Wartime conservation Efforts made by the Americans during the war to save things that could possibly be used for the war effort Examples: rubber, gasoline scrap iron, tin cans, rags, etc

38 Rationing A system that was used to divide goods so items weren’t wasted Items included: meat, sugar, coffee, gas, etc People received coupon books that allowed them to purchase these items

39 Lend-Lease Act A law passed by Congress that allowed the US to amend the Neutrality Acts to lend military equipment and supplies to any nation the President approved

40 Battle of Midway A battle that is considered to be the most important naval engagement in the Pacific Ocean campaign Americans were victorious and it became a turning point in World War II It was huge moral boost for Americans and helped them to overcome the difficulty of resupplying its forces

41 D-Day Battle that took place on the European theater; it was called Operation Overlord It was the allied invasion of Nazi occupied France Allies were victorious and managed the push the Axis powers back

42 The Fall of Berlin One of the final battles of the European theater One of the bloodiest battles in history Adolf Hitler and many of his followers committed suicide

43 Atomic Bomb A new weapon created during the World War II era It was developed in Los Alamos and the code name was the Manhattan Project This would change the way that people would fight in war

44 Marshall Plan An agreement that Americans would offer money to nations to help rebuild Western Europe after World War II US spent $13 billion on aid

45 Containment A policy adopted following World War II Goal was to stop the spread of communism It was the basis for many U.S. foreign policy decisions during the Cold War

46 Truman Doctrine An agreement that said the US would supply any nation with economic and military aid if they oppose communism

47 Korean War A conflict in the 1950s because North Korea attempted to come into South Korea and spread communism China was backing North Korea at the time Americans will invade North Korea and try to eliminate communism from Korea

48 McCarthyism A movement that took place after World War II Caused by the fear that communism would spread to the U.S. Led to a series of “Red Scares” led by a U.S. Senator

49 Cuban Revolution A movement led by Fidel Castro; he made himself the President for life and suspended all elections He eventually was supported by the Soviet Union

50 Bay of Pigs A response to the Cuban Revolution and Fidel Castro Failed attempt at invading Cuba to get rid of Castro This would be an embarrassment for Kennedy and the U.S.

51 Cuban Missile Crisis The Soviet Union had sent missiles into Cuba Kennedy will respond by sending missiles to Turkey that will be pointed toward the Soviets Soviets agree to remove missiles and Americans take missiles out of Turkey

52 Vietnam War In the 1960s America gets involved in this conflict to contain communism in this country The Vietcong were attempting to spread communism to the South

53 Tet Offensive This was the largest and most damaging campaign of the Vietcong They attempted to drive out American forces from Vietnam by attacking military bases in the South This caused many Americans to question President Johnson and why we were at war It led to many protests
