2 Vocabulary New Deal (FDR’s Plan) – The program of President Franklin D. Roosevelt meant to promote economic recovery and social reform and to end the Great Depression

3 A New Deal During Hoover’s presidency, the economy worsened. Americans blamed him for the ongoing suffering. During the Great Depression, some people who lost their homes gathered in temporary shelters made of tents or scrap metal that were called Hoovervilles. Hoover Flags Hoover Blankets Hoovervilles

4 A New Deal Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for President and won the 1932 election by a wide margin. In the 1932 election, the Democratic candidate for vice president was John Nance Garner.

7 A New Deal Roosevelt launched the New Deal, a series of programs designed to fix problems caused by the Depression. FDR Way to Remember: Hoover – Vacuum – Sucks RoOSEvelt – RoOSE US out of Great Depression

8 A New Deal As part of the New Deal, Roosevelt established agencies designed to create jobs and provide relief to the unemployed. Some agencies addressed farming issues. However, some political leaders objected to the federal spending that funded these programs. National Recovery Act

9 A New Deal New federal agencies formed during the 1930s were called alphabet agencies. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a federal agency formed to hire young men to work on public projects, which included more than two dozen state parks in Texas. 14 A New Deal Heading the National Youth Administration (NYA) in Texas was a young man named Lyndon Baines Johnson, who would later become president of the United States. NYA LBJ

15 A New Deal The New Deal helped farmers by forming cooperatives that could borrow money to bring electricity to an area, paying farmers to limit the amount of crops that went to market, and teaching farmers to adopt better farm practices. The Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) tried to solve the problem of low crop prices due to oversupply by paying farmers to not plant crops.

16 A New Deal One of the New Deal's most notable accomplishments was the creation of the Social Security system, a program that is still in use today.

17 A New Deal While the New Deal did not end the Great Depression, it improved the economy and had a lasting impact.

19 A New Deal Despite the difficulties of the Great Depression, Texas celebrated its 100th year of independence in 1936. The city of Dallas was chosen to host the centennial celebration and expo. The federal and state government and WPA also helped fund the centennial (100 th Anniversary).
