Medical University of South Carolina Facility information – 700-bed academic medical center in Charleston, SC – Ranked #1 hospital in SC by US News and World Report Strong history of clinical research with over $94.6M in NIH funding – Home of the South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research Institute (SCTR), a National Institute of Health funded research support center SCTR’s SUCCESS Center houses the Recruitment Core NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

Research Awareness and Recruitment: An Untapped Opportunity Barriers to recruitment include – Lack of information available to the general public – A lack of information among physicians and clinical providers regarding ongoing trials A majority of Americans report willingness to participate in clinical trials if approached – First step to increasing recruitment success = increase awareness and education – Has lead to national trend to incorporate research into clinical practice NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

An overview of Interactive Patient Care A care delivery model that focuses on patient engagement Brings education and entertainment opportunities to the patient bedside, usually through TV Allows for more individualized care in such areas as pain management, medication training, understanding and education surrounding diagnoses NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

The GetWellNetwork® “GetWellNetwork ® is the leading provider of Interactive Patient care solutions serving hospitals and health care organizations through the United States.”- GetWellNetwork website, getwellnetwork.com – Clients include 35 children’s hospitals, 35 Magnet®- designated hospitals, a dozen academic medical centers and several Baldrige Performance Excellence Program winners. 10 Original Opportunity Statement (2014) Develop and evaluate the incorporation of a research component into MUSC’s customized GetWellNetwork platform to familiarize the patients (as well as visitors and clinicians) with clinical trials and to raise awareness about, and promote participation in, ongoing studies throughout the state. NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

Objectives to Achieve Our Goal Integrate a research component via creation of a “Research” tile with related resources Relocate and optimize use of the “Research” tile – Move to spot on the first “favorites” bar appearing on main screen – Include community-vetted research info & recruitment video Develop prompted questions to appear as alerts on patient TVs to gather info about interest in research and to direct them to the video resource NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

Methodology for Implementation Presentation by SCTR’s IPC committee representatives to full committee for approval of a new research component – Feedback from committee on appropriateness of patient alerts SCTR worked with IPC manager for integration into GWN system and 3-phase execution strategy NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

3 Phase Implementation Phase 1: Initial integration of the “Research” tile and subsequent relocation to the first “Favorites” bar so it has a prominent location Phase 2: Pilot incorporating prompting to engage in self-learning about research via patient alerts to the GWN screens of one wing of the hospital for a period of two weeks Phase 3: Hospital-wide roll out of patient alerts NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

Patient /Visitor Experience Using IPC Research Component During Pilot What they saw: Continuous presence of the “Research” tile on “favorites” bar on the main screen Patient alert that appeared on screen during visit asking about interest in learning about research What they did: Could visit & explore, at any time, the “Research” tile located on the main screen of GWN If interest was expressed when alerts appear, they’d be shown the research info and recruitment video and then directed to “Research” tile for additional resources NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

Sample of Patient Alerts & “Research” Tile NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

Some Initial Results Phase 1: 5x as many bi-weekly visits to the “Research” tile with location change to first “Favorites” bar (leading to increased visits to the online resources found in tile) Phase 2 and 3 Findings after First Month: 100% of those who completed were patients 64% of those who responded to prompts chose to watch the research video 100% of those who watched video and completed follow up questions: - Felt it helped them to better understand research - Made them feel more likely to participate in a research study in the future NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

Then what happened?? MUSC temporarily reevaluated hospital's use of GWN All active prompting was removed Little promotion of the non-clinical tiles NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450 The good news… GetWellNetwork remains with new team members who are eager to optimize the platform The team reached out to us to help refocus effort on the research component New strategies already being implemented

Next Steps: The future is bright! Piloting the marketing of particular trials to specific floor units – studies most appropriate for a particular group of inpatients will be highlighted in those patient rooms Develop training for clinical staff and hospital volunteers on how to engage patients and visitors about the research component Long term goals: – establish a network that can be used to have research teams immediately available to answer questions about/enroll in trials – Develop a mechanism to use this tool as a dissemination strategy for study findings NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450

Big “Wins” through Research Component Integration Increased recruitment opportunities within a historically untapped patient population Greater collaboration between clinical and research environments – The more familiar clinicians become with research, the more likely they may get involved Opportunity for patients to be their own health advocates – better understanding of their condition and potential treatment options – method of patient and family activation and engagement, which are the focal points for Interactive Patient Care NIH Grant Number UL1 TR001450
