2 Many American settlers moved to Texas after Mexico achieved independence from Spain. Spain lost control of Mexico –1810: Father Miguel Hidalgo led a revolt of 80,000 peasants Hoped that getting rid of Spain would make lives improve –Hidalgo’s revolt failed Inspired a continued rebellion 1821: Mexico became independent Mexican government hires “empressarios” to bring settlers to Texas – –American settlers flocked to that region Mexico worried it was losing control of Texas – –American settlers were breaking Mexican laws Americans brought slaves despite being illegal in Mexico –1830: –Texans started thinking about independence
