2 Objectives 2 Discuss the mental and behavioral health issues impacting your patients, and how those issues impact you Decrease stigmas associated with mental and behavioral health Review language and tools to help the team care for patients with mental and behavioral health issues

3 Purpose for this Presentation 3 ACT (Advancing Care Together): 11 sites funded across the State integrating mental and behavioral health with primary care Message is clear – when you start the integration process, the team will be forced to engage with patients in unexpected ways Patients define who’s on their ‘care team,’ not practice members Team members need support if they are being asked to help care for patients with mental and behavioral problems

4 Behavioral Health: What Is It? 4 Behavioral health: relation between human behavior, and the well-being of the body, mind, and spirit Behavioral healthcare: services for people at risk of or suffering from, mental, behavioral or addictive disorders Behavioral health refers to mental health, psychiatric, marriage and family counseling, and addictions treatment; and includes services provided by social workers, counselors, psychiatrists, neurologists, physicians, psychiatric and mental health nurses

5 The Reason Primary Care May Be Hesitant to Tackle Mental and Behavioral Health It’s really complicated! Thoughts of suicide Depression Risky sexual behavior Chronic disease Anxiety Unhealthy diet Physical inactivity Substance abuse and addiction Unhealthy weight Chronic pain

6 What’s Needed for Success 6 Empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of another Appropriate language, tools, team support

7 Mental and Behavioral Health Roundtable 7  Depression and anxiety  Suicide  Substance use disorders  Chronic pain and associated behaviors  Controlled substance addiction  Alcohol and tobacco use/addiction  Unhealthy behaviors  Diet and exercise  Oral health/dental care  Sexual behavior

8 Small Group Discussion 8 What is your position in the practice and how are you impacted by patients with:  depression/anxiety  Suicidal ideation  Substance use disorders  Unhealthy behaviors What would be helpful to assist you in caring for and building relationships with these patients? (MI, huddles, practice mtgs, Mental Health First Aid, etc.) How can the care team gain confidence to pro-actively engage these patients?

9 Large Group Discussion What did you learn? Are there tools or trainings around mental and behavioral health that would benefit your practice? How can your practice continue to promote mental and behavioral healthcare? Other?
