How Are We Addressing Our Use Of Natural Resources (NR)? By: Aya and Batoul

Introduction The way we use NR has to change. The actions of one area of the world will impact another. Large impacts in distant parts of the world can be caused by small decisions.

Understanding Multiple Perspectives Different groups have different approaches on how we should use and preserve natural resources (NR). Here are some approaches for thinking about NR: AA conservation approach means using resources wisely to keep using them for a long time. AA frontier approach views what people want and need. AA preservation approach says that resources should be preserved, set aside, and protected.

Responding to Environmental Challenges Sometimes we respond to environmental challenges as individuals. For example we might take the bus or walk instead of driving. Or we might respond to these challenges in groups. Organizations work to protect natural resources. They educate people and raise awareness of issues. They might also make laws and regulations to help preserve natural resources. For example buildings in Chicago and Toronto now require green roofs.

Actions to Conserve NR Companies have started making energy efficient appliances and light bulbs. This benefits people by saving the money. It also reduces the amount of NR we use to meet our needs CREATING NATIONAL PARKS AND HERITAGE SITES Another way to conserve our NR is by protecting important areas of land and water, which helps preserve and conserve land. In the late nineteenth century some people recognized that the land needed to be protected and conserved for the future and they created the U.S. National Park System.

PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT TThe United Nations developed significant places known as World Heritage sites. NNatural Heritage sites are protected because: They are areas of exceptional natural beauty. They represent a major stage of Earth’s history. They are an example of important ecosystems and communities of living things. They contain significant natural habitats of living things.

Definitions Green roof: A green roof is a roof of a building that is covered with vegetation.
