1 Mixed Factoring

2 Steps to mixed factoring To factor a polynomial completely, you may need to use more than one factoring method. Use the steps on the next slide to factor a polynomial completely.

3 Factoring Mixed Polynomials 1. Check for a GCF. 2. If a binomial check for two perfect squares or two perfect cubes. 3. If there are four terms factor by grouping 4. If it is a trinomial with a coefficient of 1, factor by guess and check. 5. If it is a trinomial with a leading coefficient other than 1, multiply AxC, and split the middle term with the factors of AxC. Then factor by grouping.

4 2. Count terms1. GCF 2 terms 3 terms 4 terms Perfect Square? Perfect Cube? Leading Coefficient? Group Split term & group yes Guess & Check no a 2 -b 2 =(a+b)(a-b) a 3 -b 3 =(a-b)(a 2 +ab+b 2 ) a 3 +b 3 =(a+b)(a 2 -ab+b 2 )
