Waves A wave is a disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another. A medium is any substance that a wave moves through. Example 1: Water is the medium for an ocean wave Example 2: The ground is the medium for an earthquake wave.

Waves Waves that transfer energy through matter are known as mechanical waves. Example of mechanical waves: water, the ground, a rope, air = all made up of matter

Waves In a transverse wave, the direction in which the wave travels is perpendicular to the direction of the disturbance. Example of transverse wave: Snapping a rope Direction of Disturbance Direction of Wave

In a longitudinal wave, the wave travels in the same direction as the disturbance. Example of longitudinal wave: the coils in a spring, slinky Direction of Disturbance Direction of Wave

Wave Properties Crest – Highest point, or peak,of wave. Trough – Lowest point, or valley, of a wave. Amplitude – Distance between the middle of a wave and a crest. Wavelength – The distance from one wave crest to the very next crest. Frequency – The number of waves passing a fixed point in a certain amount of time.
