SURVIVAL IN ADULTS UNDERGOING KIDNEY TRANSPLANT FROM CADAVERIC DONORS COMPARED WITH PATIENTS ON WAITING LIST IN ARGENTINA 2005-2009 Bisigniano, Liliana MD., López-Rivera Arturo MD., Tagliafichi Viviana, Fernández Víctor MD., Soratti Carlos MD.

Introduction In population-based studies, renal transplantation has been shown to improve survival compared to dialysis patients awaiting transplantation

Objective To evaluate the association between renal transplantation using cadaveric donors and patient survival compared with patients on waiting list in Argentina, considering patients over the age of 18.

Materials & Methods The information was obtained from SINTRA for the period January 2005 to June 2009. The follow-up period was closed in December 2010. Survival time was defined as the time between inclusion in waiting list till death, the term of the study (June 2009), or the last follow-up visit recorded, what occurred first in time.

Materials & Methods  The Kaplan Meir method was used, and survival was measured at 30 days, 1 and 5 years.  The Log Rank test was used to compare the curves and their statistical significance.  With Cox regression with a time –dependant covariable, we analysed the survival of patients with the same 0 time on listing.  Risk was measured during the total observation period, at 30 days, 1 year and > 1 year.

Conclusions Survival, both at baseline and in the long term, is better in transplant patients as compared to patients on waiting list. In Cox time–dependant regression the risk of death during the first 30 days is 4 times higher in transplant patients. This reverses and at 1 year, transplant patients are 60% less likely to die, and after one year this probability is 81% lower (p=<0.0001).

Take Home Message This confirms the need to foster the donation and procurement of organs for transplantation.
