Lesson 6-4 Point-Slope Form of Linear Equations
2
Review So Far We have worked with 2 forms of linear equations Slope Intercept form Standard Form
3
Point Slope Form Use when you know: One Point and the Slope Example: Find the equation of a line passing through the point (3,4) with a slope of 2 OR Write the equation the line from the graph When the y intercept is not easily determined
4
Point Slope Form Comes from the formula to find slope Remember: Slope = rise over run Or m = difference in y difference in x Or m = y 2 – y 1 x 2 – x 1
5
Example Find the equation of a line passing through the point (3,4) with a slope of 2 Notice: if the coordinate is positive, leave the minus sign in the equation!
6
Practice Point Slope Formula My Turn: Find the equation of a line passing through the point (-2,6) with a slope of 1/2 Your Turn: Find the equation of a line passing through the point (2, -1) with a slope of 5
7
Practice Point Slope Formula My Turn: (1, -4), (2, 6) Your Turn: (5, 2), (3, 1) (-3, 4), (0, -2)
8
Practice Write the equation of the line using point slope formula.
9
Practice – Your Turn Write the equation of the line using point slope formula.
