Round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.

Use grid multiplication to investigate products of numbers

150 W bulb costs 0·9p per hour to run. 100 W bulb costs 0·6p per hour to run. 50 W bulb costs 0·3p per hour to run.

In my house I use 13 light bulbs. All of the light bulbs are 150 W bulbs. How much money do I use a day?

Investigate how much money you would save in a day if all the bulbs in my house were replaced with 100 watt bulbs. What about in a week? What about in a year?

Do I leave the lights on all day?

One hundred multiplied by 7170 is the same as 71700 Ten lots of fifty pounds and five pence is 55 pounds. Ten pounds and ten pence multiplied by ten is one hundred and ten pounds.

Round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.

Roll a 0–9 die four times and write down the numbers. Use the numbers to complete the calculation: Can you use the numbers rolled to make an answer of 12? How close to 12 can you get? What if you rolled the die five times to complete this calculation: EXT: Can you use the numbers rolled to make a product of 300? How close to 300 can you get?

Revise Bus Stop Method of Division

Express a quotient as a fraction, or as a decimal rounded to one decimal place.

To check whether the answer to a division is correct we can use the INVerse operation.

LOOK… 57 ÷ 3 = 19 Q. Which two numbers should we multiply to check whether this is correct?

57 ÷ 3 = 19 To use the inverse operation we should multiply 19 by 3. 19 x 3 = 57

46/7= Look at this as a multiplication! How many sevens make 46?

How can we write this as a decimal? What other easy divisors are there?

Find the closest multiple below the number. How many 7s make this multiple? Calculate how many sevenths to get from the closest multiple to your number.

Round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.

Revise Chunking

Chunking is a division method. Only use chunking when you are dividing 2 digit or bigger numbers!

What method would you use for smaller numbers?

288 ÷ 12 = 12288 we know 10 x 12120 168 we know 10 x 12120 0 24 We circle the number of groups. we know 4 x 12 48 48

434 ÷ 14 = 14434 we know 20 x 14280 154 we know 10 x 14140 0 31 We circle the number of groups. we know 1 x 14 14 14

Try this one on your whiteboard… 864 ÷ 24 = 86424 we know 20 x 24480 384 we know 10 x 24240 144 36 we know 6 x 24 144 0
