From Glasgow to Beijing Lesson 5 Human Rights

Learning Intentions Academic Goal – To review the rights of children as set out in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Child. – To learn about human rights issues in China Social Goal – To work as part of a group to identify information about human rights

Success Criteria I can explain, with examples, rights that children in Scotland have. I can give examples of human rights issues in China and explain the rights that are being denied to their citizens.

Rights of the Child Last year you studied the Rights of the Child and learned about what rights and responsibilities you have. Your teacher is going to give you out cards showing rights that every child should have. These rights are written in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Child.

In groups you are going to look at these cards and think of examples for 3 of them that show these rights are met in Scotland For example – Children have the right to an education. This exists in Scotland as there is a system of compulsory education for all children until they are 16. Write these in your jotters.

In China, they do not have the same level of human rights that we do. http://www.amnesty.org.uk/content.asp?Cate goryID=10498&ArticleID=2574 http://www.amnesty.org.uk/content.asp?Cate goryID=10498&ArticleID=2574 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdJaaN31 mdM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdJaaN31 mdM

Task You are now going to look at human rights in China with your shoulder partner. You will be given 4 case studies, each explaining a different part of life in China You have to read the information and discuss what human rights people have or do not have. Write your answers in your jotter.

Lesson Recap This lesson has looked at the rights of the child, in particular how these rights are met in Scotland We have also looked at how some people in China do not have all their human rights protected.

Key Question Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Not all human rights are protected in China. Give reasons for your answer.
