The Honors & Awards Subcommittee administers the professional recognition awards presented by AIAA on behalf of the Air Breathing Propulsion Technical Committee

59 ABP_GM_011105.ppt 59 AIAA Air Breathing Propulsion Technical Committee 43 rd AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting & Exhibit Air Breathing Propulsion Award u Rules state that award can be given only if a minimum of 3 nominations are active. u In 2004, we did not initially have the necessary 3 nominees. AIAA agreed to extend deadline from 31 October 2003 to 15 February 2004 in order to allow additional nominations. TC members were asked to help publicize and solicit additional nominations by 15 February deadline. Extension achieved intent, ultimately resulting in a selection pool of 3 nominees – one of whom was selected. u 4 Member Selection Team: ABP: Jeff Hamstra (Chair) and Dan Jensen (Honors & Awards Chair) Propellants & Combustion: TC Chair and Awards Chair u This year, we received no new nominations and so are at 2 nominees and again need an extension. AIAA has given us until 31 January but will not allow an extension again next year out of fairness to other TCs! u Technical Discipline Area Leads (Turbine Engine, High-Speed Propulsion and Propulsion Integration) are asked to encourage nominations of leaders in their fields. Other TC members are also asked to encourage nominations. Please have nominator advise Dan Jensen of “intent to nominate” as soon as possible. Awarded for meritorious, career-spanning accomplishment in the science or art of Air Breathing Propulsion

96 ABP_GM_011105.ppt 96 AIAA Air Breathing Propulsion Technical Committee 43 rd AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting & Exhibit 2006 Candidate ITAR Restricted Sessions u A Concern Is Growing That the JPC Is Experiencing Significant Paper/Session Withdrawals and Reduced Technical Content u We Suggest the Addition of Several ITAR Controlled Sessions to Strengthen the Relevance, Technical Content and Participation in Selected U.S. Only Sessions Candidate ITAR Controlled Topics u Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) Propulsion u Integrated High Performance Rocket Propulsion Technology (IHPRPT) Programs u Strategic Propulsion Applications Programs u FALCON Propulsion Programs

97 ABP_GM_011105.ppt 97 AIAA Air Breathing Propulsion Technical Committee 43 rd AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting & Exhibit 2006 Candidate ITAR Restricted Sessions u Recommended Approach:  Establish Separate Sessions During Conference  “Special Interest Session - By Invitation Only”  Use Dedicated Room or Dedicated Building  Post Door Monitor(s) to Limit Access to Approved Participants  Unobtrusive Marking on Badge; Citizenship Status Would Be Verified During Registration  Will Need to Coordinate Registration Forms and Badging with AIAA  Ensure Adequate Security During Presentations  Close Doors  Request That All Cell Phones/Pagers/Recording Devices Be Turned Off  Ensure Dedicated PC/Projector Is Available for Presentations u Option to Hold Separate Sessions on Following Day Is Less Desirable  Added Cost  Limited Attendance

99 ABP_GM_011105.ppt 99 AIAA Air Breathing Propulsion Technical Committee 43 rd AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting & Exhibit New Paper Review Process u A new emphasis will be placed on ensuring that abstracts meet the minimum requirements. u Will likely be moving to a stricter “peer review” process where authors will receive feedback on their papers by the reviewers. u Papers not meeting minimum requirements will either be rejected or returned to the author for revision.  This will place more work on the reviewers to do a thorough review of each paper, but will ultimately improve the quality of the conference.
