2 Battles and Key Events German Invasion of Poland – Germany vs. Poland – Germany Wins using the Blitzkrieg…UK and France declare war on Germany German Invasion of Low Countries and France – Germany vs. UK and France – Germany Wins using the Blitzkrieg and Occupies France and Western Europe. – British and French Soldiers escape at Dunkirk. London (Britain) Blitz – Germany Bombs Britain in an attempt to weaken the island before an all out invasion. – Bombing Campaign doesn’t work and Germany cannot invade Britain.

3 Battles and Key Events Battle of El Alamein (Egypt) – Axis (Germany/Italy) vs. British – Axis wants access to the Suez Canal in Egypt. – Turning Point Battle – British Win North African and Southern (Italian) Front – Axis (Germany/Italy) vs. Allies (UK/USA) – Allies win. Italy drops out of war. Allies can now bomb Germany from southern Italy.

4 Battles and Key Events Operation Barbarossa – Germany vs. Soviet Union – Germany breaks Non-Aggression Pact and invades the Soviet Union. – At first the invasion is successful but eventually stalls due to the winter. Battle of Stalingrad – Germany vs. Soviet Union – Germans want to cut the Red Army off from their oil supply and also take the oil for themselves. – Turning Point Battle. – Soviet Union Wins.

5 Battles and Key Events D-Day – Allies vs. Germany – Allied invasion of France at Normandy – The biggest amphibious invasion in human history. – Allies Win and then continue to liberate the rest of France from Germany. Battle of the Bulge – Allies vs. Germany – Last German Offensive – Takes place in Belgium and Luxembourg – Allies Win and Germany is left defenseless on the Western Front – Germany eventually surrenders because the Red Army is also taking over Berlin in East Germany.

6 Battles and Key Events Yalta Conference – USA, UK, and Soviet Union meet in Yalta to discuss the future of Europe. – The leaders meet… Franklin Roosevelt (USA) Winston Churchill (UK) Joseph Stalin (USSR) – Decide that Germany will be split into four zones of occupation. – Soviet Union will join the Pacific War, three months after Germany Surrenders. Holocaust – “Final Solution” by Nazi’s that kill 6 Million Jews. Nazi kill another 5 million non Jews as well.

7 Battles and Key Events Pearl Harbor – Sneak Attack by Japanese on US Naval Base in Hawaii. – USA enters War. Battle of Midway – USA vs. Japan – Turning Point Battle – USA Wins Island Hopping Campaign – Allies vs. Japan – USA Wins and gets closer and closer to Japanese Islands

8 Battles and Key Events Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa – USA vs. Japan – USA finally takes control of some smaller Japanese Islands. – Both Japanese Military and Civilian show a unwillingness to surrender. Manhattan Project – USA develop Atomic Weapons. Hiroshima and Nagasaki – USA drops Atomic Bombs on Japanese Cities in an effort to end World War II quickly and same both US Military and Japanese Civilian lives.
