How would you do these calculations? 5,675 + 3,200 9,478 + 4,763

Mental Written Methods Before carrying out a calculation, children should consider: -Can I do it in my head? -Can I estimate the answer? -Could I do informal jottings to keep track of the mental calculation? -Do I need a formal written method? Formal written methods are only introduced when children can use a wide range of mental strategies

Addition Number lines Number squares Partitioning Expanded column method Compact column method NUMBER FACTS!

Subtraction Number lines – counting back Number squares Number lines – counting on Expanded column method (supported with Base 10 equipment) Compact column method NUMBER FACTS!

Multiplication Multiplying by multiples of 10 Partitioning: TU x U Grid Method Expanded short method Compact short multiplication Long multiplication TIMES TABLES!

Division Number line Short division by chunking Formal short division Long division TIMES TABLES!

National curriculum Formal written methods are introduced at these points in the curriculum. Addition and Subtraction Year 3 Multiplication Year 4 DivisionYear 5 Guides showing progression through the year groups for all areas of the maths curriculum are on the school websiteschool website

National curriculum Expectations for recall of addition and subtraction number facts Recall and use addition and Year 2 subtraction facts to 20 fluently

National curriculum Expectations for recall of multiplication and division facts 2x 5x 10xYear 2 3x 4x 8xYear 3 All tables up to 12 x 12Year 4

National curriculum Expectations for mental calculation x and ÷ Show that multiplication of two numbers can be done in any Year 2 order and division of one number by another cannot Two-digit numbers x one-digit (using known times tables)Year 3 Use place value, known and derived facts to multiply andYear 4 divide mentally, including: x 0 and x1; dividing by 1, multiplying three numbers together Multiply and divide mentally, drawing on known factsYear 5 Perform mental calculations, including mixed operations andYear 6 large numbers

Supporting your child at home Homework Number facts Times tables Suggested times tables websites and activities are in your pack and on the school website.

Supporting your child at home Be positive: what you say about maths really counts. Talk and listen to your child about their work in maths. It will help your child if they have to explain to you. If your child cannot do their homework, tell the teacher. Try to make it fun: cards, bingo, physical games, board games, online games. Try to make it real: cooking, shopping, telling the time. Little and often. Suggestions for activities to help your child at home are on the school websiteschool website
