2 Parts of an MCQ A stem – the main part or question Options – the choices provided after the stem The key or the correct answer in the list of options Distracters – the incorrect answers in the list of options

5 Things to think about before writing an MCQ? What are you testing? Use familiar language Make sure there is only one correct answer (make distracters plausible) Avoid using similar words in the stems and in the options

6 Imagine you were taking the test Would you get confused when reading the stem and options? (clarity) Would you be able to answer the question without looking at the options? (re-write the stem)

7 Imagine you were taking the test (2) Are the options straight from the book? (If so, there is a problem) Are the distracters weak? Students may be able to guess the correct answer (re-write)

8 Starting to write an MCQ What are you testing? Grammar, vocabulary, something else? Make sure your question tests what you intend.
