Solar Vocabulary & Chap. 23 Questions Grade your paper with integrity… the right answers will be answers on the exam Friday.

Solar System The Sun, its planets, and all other objects in orbit around the sun or planets.

ATMOSPHERE A mixture of gasses that surround a planet Earth’s Atmosphere is mostly N, O, and Carbon Dioxide, It also has layers

SPACE EXPLORATION Traveling beyond our planets atmosphere to make discoveries and learn about the unknown. the investigation of physical conditions in space and on stars, planets, and other celestial bodies through the use of artificial satellites, space probes and spacecraft with human crews.

PLANETS Celestial Bodies that have been captured by the gravational forces of OUR sun and has a set elliptical orbit Has enough gravitational force to clear its “neighborhood” and make it round.

Gravity The force of attraction between objects that have mass. More MASS= Greater gravity

Celestial Body Natural objects visible in the sky such as the sun, moon, a planet, comet, star, or nebula.

SPACE STATION A large satellite equipped to support a human crew and designed to remain in orbit around Earth for an extended period and serve as a base for launching exploratory expeditions, conducting research, repairing satellites, and performing other space- related activities.

MASS Vs. WEIGHT MASS- The amount of matter in an object (this does not change) Weight- the force of gravity pulling on the said mass. (this would change depending on what planet you are on)

Question #2 Oxygen Liquid Water Stable and Warm (enough) Temperature Energy Source Essential Elements

Question #3 Earth’s atmosphere was the results of gasses being released as it cooled, volcanic activity, comets of ice crashing into it, and lastly photosynthetic organisms releasing oxygen. In the end the atmosphere contained mostly, Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon Dioxide.

Question #4 Earth layers were formed as the denser materials and elements sank to the center of the earth and the less dense materials floated to the surface. Think about oil and water- how they separate when mixed.

Question #5 A Nebula is a VERY large cloud out in space, composed of dust and gasses that have all the necessary ingredients to form into planets, starts and other celestial bodies.

Question #6 The force of gravity between two objects depends on the mass of the two objects and the distance between the two objects. Less Attraction: More Attraction:
