1 Poetry Research Paper Guided Editing

2 INSERT COMMENTS IN YOUR PAPER. During this process, feel free to INSERT COMMENTS IN YOUR PAPER.

3 thesis 1. Look at your thesis. Does it state that your poet’s writing is American (and maybe how)? NOW BOLD IT! topic sentences claims 2. Look at each of your topic sentences. Does each say something that supports your thesis ( because they are your claims )? NOW BOLD THEM!

4 body paragraphs evidence warrants 3. Look at your body paragraphs. Does the evidence in each paragraph sufficiently support/prove the topic sentence in that paragraph? Do you use warrants to show how the evidence proves the claims?

5 Remember, this paper is not about analyzing poetry. You only need to do this if it helps you prove how your poet’s writing is American.

6 4. Highlight references to poems. (you should have direct quotations from at least four different poems) two 5.Highlight literary criticism references. (you should have at least two references & they should be from two different critics – one needs to be a direct quotation)

7 6. Do the references to poems and literary criticisms flow well with the text? 7. Look at the restatement of thesis. Is it worded differently from the thesis? If you listed in the thesis, don’t list here.

8 8.Look at your introduction. Do you like it? How might you improve it? 9.Look at your conclusion. Do you like it? How might you improve it? Be sure that you DON’T just restate your claims (yawn, yawn). Instead, write what you would say if your reader said, “So what?” after reading your paper.

9 sources 10. Check that your sources are cited correctly and that your works cited page entries are correctly written.

11 11. Read aloud to yourself the entire piece. Does it “sound” right? Check for any sentence errors, passive voice, problems with parallel structure. 12. The last thing to check is punctuation and MLA format. How did you do on both?
