2 * Japan seeks a Pacific Empire: * Japan captures: Philippines, Burma, Malaya, and most of the Islands in the South Pacific * 12/7/41 Japan Bombs Pearl harbor and destroys much of the US fleet (US declares war on Japan) * Japan invades French Indochina and the US cuts off oil supply to Japan

3 The Allies Strike Back: * U.S. Begins small scale bombing in Japan * Battle of the Coral Sea *stops the Japanese advance and signals new kind of naval combat (Aircraft Carriers)

4 * Battle of Midway * Outnumbered American planes attack Japan's carriers while planes attack the island (massive damage to the Japanese fleet) * Turning point in the war

5 * Japanese “dig in” and fight long guerrilla war with massive casualties * Battle of Guadalcanal: * Americans invade to prevent completion of air base * Island hopping “hit’em where they ain’t”

6 " Hell was red furry spiders as big as your fist, Giant lizards as long as your leg, leeches falling from trees to suck your blood, armies of white ants with a bite of fire, scurrying scorpions inflaming any flesh they touched, enormous rats and bats everywhere, and rivers with waiting crocodiles.
