3 Tribal Libraries 1.There are over 100 tribal and tribal college libraries nationwide. 2. They are often under funded gems that accomplish great things in the communities they serve. 3. Tribal college libraries often serve as tribal libraries for their communities.

4 Tribal College Libraries Serve a college community that is affiliated with a tribe or tribes. Often Serve as public and tribal libraries for their communities as well. Serve diverse and innovative roles that fill the needs of their communities. Most are partially funded by the Tribally Controlled College or University Assistance Act of 1978.

5 Tribal College History First tribal college Dine College on the Navajo Nation in U.S. Southwest 1968. Sitting Bull College began 33 years ago today. Has grown to encompass 34 institutions that span the nation. 1994 legislation awarded land grant status to the existing 29 TCU’s (since then, 3 more have been given land grant status).

6 Tribal College Facts American Indian Culture emphasized throughout the curriculum. College acts as a “family support system” for students.

7 North Dakota Tribal College Libraries Candeska Cikana (Little Hoop) Community College, Fort Totten (Spirit Lake Nation). Turtle Mountain Community College, Belcourt (Turtle Mountain). Fort Berthold Community College, New Town (MHA Nation). Sitting Bull College, Fort Yates (Standing Rock Nation). United Tribes Technical College, Bismarck.

9 (American Indian Higher Education Consortium) AIHEC Most Tribal Colleges are members of this organization. 34 tribal colleges nationwide. Annual conference sponsored by local AIHEC colleges for shared meetings, trainings and student competitions.

11 Tribal Librarians Institute An Annual five day professional development conference held at MSU Bozeman for tribal college librarians. Includes 34 AIHEC member colleges plus several Canadian (First Nations) colleges. The nexus of tribal college librarian support, networking and mentoring.

12 TCLI Facts Since inception in 1990 150 participants from 50 different institution have taken part. Cooperate through shared association TCULA (Tribal College and University Library Association) and email listserv.

14 Some Library Views Tribal College Libraries become the centers of both campus and communities
