Cystic Fibrosis By:YaYPhineas(Edward)

What is Cystic Fibrosis? A genetic disorder that affects your digestive and respiratory system You inherit a defective gene that stops the movement of salt throughout cells in Chromosome 7 This gene is called a CFTR( cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator)

Symptoms of this disease Causes lots of mucus build up Salty tasting skin Sudden weight loss Coughing or wheezing Respiratory illnesses Greasy stools

Diagnoses of Cystic Fibrosis Doctors collect sweat of your leg and measure the amount of salt in it If the sweat has 2 to 5 times more salt than normal you probably have Cystic Fibrosis In infants doctors measure the amount of protein

How is the Disease Treated? There is no cure for the disease yet Using treatments to help recipients live longer Chest physical therapy is used to clear mucus out of the air passage way Antibiotic inhalers kill bacteria that may cause lung disease Gene therapy is used to insert a healthy CFTR in your lung cells.

How do people get the disease? It is a genetic disease If both parents have the faulty disease the child will most likely have it Carriers may not have the disease but they can still pass it on to their children and they can develop the disease The gene does not always give you the disease

How Cystic Fibrosis effect the respiratory system? Lung cells absorb too much sodium and water Thin sections of lung become thick and hard to remove Can cause constant infection Causes a constant cough and blood in the sputum

How does Cystic Fibrosis effect your digestive system? Causes pancreas malfunctions which disable glucose level control and aid to digestion Causes pancreas to become thick and effects enzyme production Creates difficulty absorbing fats, proteins, and vitamins A, D, E, and K Can also do the same to liver and cause liver disease

Not So Fun Facts More than 1,000 different mutations of the disease have been discovered in patients About 2,500 babies are born with the disease each year More than 10,000,000 Americans contain the gene but don’t know it

Not So Fun Facts Continued The most common mutation of the disease(70%) is a 3-base deletion in the DNA sequence Disease can be very deadly and causes most affected ones to die early Clogs up many airways with mucus build up and causes lots of pain
