Risk perception? Risk perception is the subjective judgement that people make about the characteristics and severity of a risk. What factors might cause this to increase? Or decrease?

Risk perception – too much or too little? Has an enormous impact on behaviour regardless of the objective conditions of the hazard Research shows people view hazards as particularly risky if they have little personal knowledge or experience People perceive low probability and high consequence events differently from experts This affects their decision making and choice behaviour Particularly recent or eventful events – people focus on what would happen if another disaster occurred. http://www.ftpress.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1412023&seqNum=4

Can earthquakes be predicted? http://www.livescience.com/6935-method-promises-earthquake- prediction.html http://www.livescience.com/6935-method-promises-earthquake- prediction.html http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/natural- disasters/earthquake7.htm http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/natural- disasters/earthquake7.htm

Task As seismologists you must research the probability of an earthquake in California Justify your claim Prepare a news report to share this information and advise stakeholders as to how they should act. http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/Earthquake-Chance-California-USGS-Report-295893531.html http://www.theguardian.com/cities/2014/mar/27/san-francisco-live-constant-risk-next-major-quake http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/nca/maps/

Tasks 1) summarise the importance of risk perception 2) what is the risk of an earthquake in California in the next 30 years? 3) What are the implications of this risk for different groups of people? 4) how are earthquake risks predicted?
