3 GLOBalization

4  The growing integration of the national economies of the world.  The term we use to describe how the world is becoming more and more interconnected. Hey, Let’s Talk! Yeah! And trade!

5 Many of the products we buy every day come from other countries. The chart below shows goods sold in the U.S., which have imported material:  Shoes: 66%  Clothing: 45%  Computers: 42%  Motor vehicles: 29%  Audio and video equipment: 28.5% Can you spot any products in this room?

6 1. The end of the Cold War (1989) meant that countries weren’t fighting over Socialism and Capitalism as much. 2. Technology advanced. (Cheaper and faster to communicate.) 3. Governments changed their policies to allow more trade and more options. How long would it take you to talk to someone in Japan?

7  Individuals, businesses, and governments are affected by events elsewhere in the world.  Globalization also means the spread of capitalism. The Ripple Effect Can you think of an event that happened somewhere else in the world but affected Americans?

8  The practice by which a company located in one country hires workers located in another country. Workers make $120 a month making stereos at this Walmart Factory in China.

9  If Americans buy Subaru cars from Korea that is an example of…  If Germans buy fast food from the American company McDonalds that is called…  If American company Toys R Us operates a factory in Latin America that is called…  If we buy Chinese brand shoes made in China…
