2 1880s to early 1940s Tin Pan Alley – Published sheet music – Sales increased with the popularity of the phonograph. – Helped popular music become a mass medium New forms of popular music – Jazz: Developed in New Orleans; an improvisational and mostly instrumental form; included African rhythm, blues and gospel. Think Louis Armstrong and popular swing jazzer Benny Goodman JazzLouis Armstrong Benny Goodman – Crooners – Frank Sinatra: Arrived in 1940s and romantic ballads foreshadowed the teen love song. 4 Battle in Rock and Roll Deejays Alan Freed and Dick Clark help rock gain acceptance. White cover versions often undermined black artists’ music. Payola, the payment to radio deejays to play certain songs, scandals portrayed rock and roll as a corrupt industry. Fear of juvenile delinquency led to censorship of rock and roll.

5 Rock and roll Changes: 1960s -1990s The Beatles invade America in 1964; opened to the door to “The British Invasion” The Beatles Rock and roll is changed to just rock – Splits the business – The Rolling Stones influence harder rock genres of the future generations and The Beatles became more of the melodic and softer sounds The Rolling Stones Detroit gives America Soul: The new generation of black performs influence the movement of Motown. Artist like James Brown & Aretha Franklin become the forefrontJames Brown Aretha Franklin Folk and the music of the Free Love movement ( as well as the popularized psychedelics) of the 1970s introduce acts like Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin & Jimi HendrixBob DylanJanis Joplin Jimi Hendrix Punk emerges in the late 1970s and became a part of the movement into the 1980s and gives the world The Sex Pistols and Blondie; largely made popular by being a response to popular rock and house by the famous CBGBThe Sex Pistols Blondie Punk fathers Grunge and alternative rock including one of the most influential acts, Nirvana. Other alternative acts that were consider soft but still well recognized include R.E.MNirvanaR.E.M With the death of Kurt Cobain, grunge opens the flood gates for new rock bands such as Green Day and Blink-182Green Day Blink-182

6 Hip-Hop Although hip-hop can be traced back to early 1980s with famous acts such as Fab Five Freddy, it became increasingly popular during the 1990sFab Five Freddy Gansta Rap: A term used to describe rap coming from the reference to “street” culture. Most notable acts included Tupac & The Notorious B.I.GTupac The Notorious B.I.G – West Side v. East Side Hip Hop becomes an even bigger musical influence in the business with acts such as Jay-ZJay-Z Hip Hop as even been known of being the most influential in dancingdancing

7 The 2000s and the reemergence of Pop Although Rock and Hip Hop were popular, a new sound mixing electronic and other influence created Pop.
