1 Vasectomy Curriculum Outcome #1 By the end of residency, residents will be able to effectively counsel patients on the following: – Benefits – Risks – Procedure – Pre- & post-procedure care instructions Effective counseling will be determined by direct observation using a core item checklist to ensure 100% of the topics were discussed in a clear, patient-oriented manner.

2 Vasectomy Curriculum Outcome #2 By the end of residency, residents will be able to perform core components of a successful vasectomy independently: – Provide adequate anesthesia – Isolate vas deferens – Occlude the vas deferens Residents will be evaluated by staff using a skills assessment evaluation during direct observation of the procedure on 10 patients, and they should reach competency by the 10th procedure.

3 Vasectomy Curriculum Outcome #3 By the end of the residency, residents will be able to identify and manage the following complications of vasectomy: – Failure to achieve sterility – Hematoma/bleeding – Infection – Sperm granuloma – Epididymitis – Permanent pain Residents will demonstrate their knowledge by scoring proficient on a case-based oral exam covering three of the six complications.
