3 Solar System- why do we call it a system? The word "solar" is taken from the Latin word for sun, Sol, leading to the term solar system, or the system of the sun.

9 What two factors keep planets orbiting around a star like the sun? Inertia An object in motion will remain in motion. An object at rest will remain at rest. UNTIL… Force that holds planets in orbit around the sun. Gravity

10 Gravity and inertia are the two factors that keep planets orbiting around a star like the sun.

11 An object with greater gravity can capture an object with lesser gravity in orbit around it.

22 Why are there stars (such as the sun)? They are the result of constant nuclear fusion: Helium (He) Heat energy Light energy H + H Hydrogen

24 What is the core of any star (such as the Sun)? It’s the innermost part of the star where fusion occurs. When the energy source of the Sun, its H, is “used up,” the Sun will no longer give off heat or light energy. It will “die.”

25 How old is our sun? Our sun is about 5 billion years old. It is believed that the sun will last about another 5 billion years.
