2 Between the late 1600’s and approximately 1730, the majority of the Coastal Plains Region of North Carolina was settled by English Immigrants.

3 Many of the English settlers in the Coastal Plains were large landowners that owned Plantations…. These people were known as… Planters, Gentry or Landed Gentry

5 The majority of African slaves were located in the Coastal Plains on Plantations.

6 African slaves were first brought to North Carolina around 1680. The Middle Passage

7 In the 1740’s, the first groups of Highland Scots arrived in North Carolina and settled the Upper Cape Fear River area, near Fayetteville

9 Highland Scots were extremely loyal to the King of England and the royal government of North Carolina. After a failed Scottish rebellion, they were given pardons in exchange for an oath of loyalty. They were also allowed to settle in North Carolina with no taxes for 10 years.

10 The Scots-Irish were Scottish dissenters (Presbyterians) who moved to Ireland in the 1600’s. Eventually, many of these people moved to North America for more economic and religious freedom.

11 In the 1730’s, Scot-Irish immigrants began to make their way into North Carolina. Most of them settled in the Piedmont, though there were settlements of Scots-Irish in the Coastal Plains too.

13 German Immigrants began to move into North Carolina around 1747, settling in the piedmont, first in Rowan County. The Old Stone House, Granite Quarry, Rowan County, built in 1766

15 Moravians were a German Protestant religious group also known as the United Brethren that settled in Forsyth County in 1753. They named their land “Wachovia.” This is were present day Winston-Salem is now.
