Slide 1 Assistive Technology Guidelines for Kentucky Schools AT Training Team

Slide 2 Objectives  Develop an understanding of assistive technology  Familiarize school personnel with assistive technology policies and procedures

Slide 3 “Each public agency shall ensure that assistive technology devices or assistive technology services, or both are made available to a child with a disability if required as a part of the child’s : a) special education; b) related services; or c) supplementary aides and services.” (CFR 300.308) Assistive Technology

Slide 4 “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities (P.L. 105-17)” Assistive Technology Device

Slide 5 Assistive technology devices include: mechanical, electronic equipment non-mechanical, non-electronic equipment specialized instructional materials, services and strategies

Slide 6 Assistive Technology Service “means any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device. (P.L. 105-17)”

Slide 7 Assistive Technology Service includes: Evaluation in natural environment Provide/purchase or lease devices

Slide 8 Select, design, fit, customize, maintain, and repair devices Coordination with other services Training for the individual and/or family, professionals, employers Assistive Technology Service includes:

Slide 9 Assistive Technology can: Assist in learning Make the environment more accessible

Slide 10 Provide access to the workplace Enhance independence Improve the quality of life Assistive Technology can:

Slide 11 Categories of Assistive Technology  Aids for Daily Living  Communication  Body Support, Alignment, & Positioning

Slide 12  Mobility and Movement  Adaptation of the Environment  Computer Applications  Sports, Leisure, and Recreation AT Categories continued:

Slide 13 Communication Facilitates the reception, internalization, and expression of information

Slide 14 Body Support and Alignment and Positioning Provides stabilization, body support, or protection for effective use of the keyboard

Slide 15 Computer Applications Devices used to enable persons with disabilities to use a computer

Slide 16 Learning, Education and Rehabilitation Devices used for learning both in and out of the classroom and for therapy

Slide 17 Continuum of Technology No Tech Low Tech Medium Tech High Tech

Slide 18 Professional Development - Developing Local Capacity Conferences (ECE, Parent Professional, KETC) Workshops University Courses AT Training Team

Slide 19 Assistive Technology, JCPS Technology Assessment and KIRIS

Slide 20 Students may participate: with no adaptations or accommodations If accommodations/adaptations are specified in the IEP through the “alternate portfolio” for students with severe cognitive disabilities

Slide 21 KETS Funds may be used to purchase AT when it provides access to the KETS statewide network or enhances a student’s use of a KETS component (e.g. computer).

Slide 22 AT Matrix Information regarding AT devices Determine pre-approve status of device Determine compatibility of device with KETS workstations

Slide 23 Matrix is located on Web page Address is: www.kde.state.ky.us/bmss/oet/ dcss/AT/Assistive_Technology. html

Slide 24 Funding Regardless of funding availability, if an IEP reflects a need for AT devices/services then the district remains financially obligated to provide the AT described.

Slide 25 Addressing District Assistive Technology Needs Action Plan Components are:

Slide 26 1. District AT Inventory 2. Conduct Training Needs Assessment 3. Develop Community Inventory 4. Include AT IEP Procedures in Local District Policies and Procedures Action Plan Components are:

Slide 27 5. Identify Local/Regional AT Evaluation Sources 6. Develop a Listing of School/Non-school At Funding 7. Develop AT Maintenance Procedures 8. Additional Considerations?

Slide 28 Steps For Determining Assistive Technology in the IEP Process

Slide 29 Who should be considered for Assistive Technology?

Slide 30 Referral and Screening Referral may mention student’s need for assistive technology or it may not become a recognized need until the analysis of the screening data.

Slide 31 Determining the Need for Evaluation

Slide 32 The Individual Education Program (IEP)

Slide 33 Will the child be required to receive an education in more restrictive environment if the AT is not provided?

Slide 34 Will personnel assigned to any objective be unable to implement strategies and activities leading to mastery of the objective(s) without AT?

Slide 35 Does the AT directly affect the acquisition of skills or information identified as a goal or outcome of public education for all children?

Slide 36 Is AT required to allow the child access to a public school program?

Slide 37 If the ARC answers “yes” to any of these questions, then there is a need for assistive technology and the services are included in the IEP.

Slide 38 Questions ? ? ? ? ?
