3 Time: 10 mins Bathrooms have a range of facilities for hand washing. What do you think is the most hygienic? Consider: A bar of soap or a soap dispenser Paper towels or a hand drier Motion-sensor taps or push-down taps Why? 3. Understand hygienic practice in relation to control of infection (3.1)

4 Role of the practitioner
Hand washing Practitioners will need to be positive role models when encouraging children to wash their hands. Children should be encouraged to wash their hands at regular times throughout the day but particularly: When they have been to the toilet Before meal and snack times After messy play After coughing or sneezing. 3. 5 Time: 20 mins Create a poster to encourage hand washing. Consider: An eye-catching image or picture A rhyme or saying to show how to wash your hands properly The age range it is to be used for The consequences of not washing your hands properly. Learners should be as creative as possible, to make the poster child-friendly and age appropriate. Examples could be laminated, so that they can be used in practice. 3. Food hygiene The policies and procedures of the setting will need to be followed when handling food. Practitioners and children should always wash their hands before handling food, whether it is a packet of snacks or a full meal preparation. The correct storage and disposal of food is important, as this will reduce the risk of contamination. 3. Understand hygienic practice in relation to control of infection (3.1)

Dealing with spillages safely Practitioners will need to follow policies and procedures when dealing with any spillages. If dealing with bodily spillages, then practitioners will need to protect themselves with gloves and aprons. If food or drink is spilt then it must be cleared up quickly to avoid a slipping hazard. If water is spilt from the water tray, then children can be encouraged to clean it up carefully to avoid accidents. 3. Understand hygienic practice in relation to control of infection (3.1)

Safe disposal of waste The policies and procedures of the setting must be followed when disposing of waste. There will be separate bins for: Food waste Nappies General waste Recycling. The correct bins must be used at all times. 3. Understand hygienic practice in relation to control of infection (3.1)

9 Time: 15 mins Think of your role as a practitioner when dealing with the safe disposal of waste in the setting. Consider: Does your setting have separate bins for different types of waste? Do you know how to safely dispose of all types of waste in the setting? Do you feel you need more advice or guidance on what to do when safely disposing of waste? Who can help you with this? Learners should reflect on their own skills and confidence in this area. Learners should be supported to realise it is OK to ask for advice. 3. Using correct personal protective equipment It is essential that settings provide staff with the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). This will include gloves, aprons and hair nets. Practitioners will need PPE when: Changing nappies Toileting Preparing or serving food Cleaning up spillages Changing children who have been sick or who have had an accident. 3. As a practitioner, you will need to be able use hygienic practice in relation to: Hand washing Food hygiene Dealing with spillages safely Safe disposal of waste Using correct personal protective equipment. 4. Be able to use hygienic practice to minimise the spread of infection (4.1)

12 Time: 15 mins Describe situations where you have had to use hygienic working practices in the setting. Describe your role in the following areas: Hand washing Food hygiene Dealing with spillages safely Safe disposal of waste Using correct personal protective equipment. Are there any situations where you feel you may need more practice or guidance? Learners should discuss their own good practice. 4. Be able to use hygienic practice to minimise the spread of infection (4.1)

13 Time: 15 mins Each group needs to pick two examples from their Group activity and discuss with the class: A situation where you have used effective hygienic practices A situation where you need more advice or guidance on how to maintain hygienic practices. Why is it important to use hygienic practice when working in the setting? All learners should compare experiences and identify areas for improvement. 4. Be able to use hygienic practice to minimise the spread of infection (4.1)

14 Time: 15 mins Create a diagram that shows how, why and where to wear PPE. Include: Parts of the body that need protecting What they need protection from What items of PPE can be worn to minimise the spread of infection. A basic outline can be given as a template. Items to include gloves, aprons, hats and hair nets. Protection from bodily fluids. Food handling to be included. 4. Be able to use hygienic practice to minimise the spread of infection (4.1)

15 Safe, hygienic practices will minimise the spread of infection.
All practitioners have a duty to follow policies and procedures to ensure safe, hygienic practices are being followed. Practitioners will need to be positive role models. Summary
