JFYNet College Readiness Assessments for Equity in College and Career Readiness NCSA 2016 June 22, 2016

Who is JFYNetWorks? JFYNetWorks is a Boston-based non-profit provider of blended learning programs to high schools, community colleges and community agencies. The JFYNet program is a school-based blended learning program that brings online resources into the classroom and helps teachers use them effectively to raise student achievement, reduce achievement gaps and help students reach college readiness. JFYNet online resources cover state, Common Core and college entry standards for MCAS and Accuplacer preparation.

What can preparation do? “Jasmine Almeida…is preparing to start classes at Bunker Hill Community College this fall and took the Accuplacer this month. Almeida said she had no idea the test would determine whether she had to take remedial classes, but now must take two in math…“I kind of looked at the questions, and I was like, ‘I know this, but I don’t know how to do it,’ ” she said. She guessed a lot.” August 8, 2015

% First Time, Full Time Students Taking Remedial Courses in Massachusetts Community Colleges: 63% State Universities: 22% University of Massachusetts: 6% Reasons for low Accuplacer Passing Rates Lack of correlation between MCAS and Accuplacer Lack of correlation between high school and college curricula/standards Lack of preparation for college standards in high school

Student Perceptions Do Not Align With College Readiness Student responses reveal a disconnect between their perceptions of college readiness and their actual preparedness. This phenomenon points to the lack of alignment that often exists between expectations for high school graduation and expectations for college readiness. Most Students Believe They Are Academically Prepared I am prepared academically to succeed in this college. Who Are These Respondents? Entering students who responded to the SENSE 2014 Promising Practices items (N=63,266) Agree/Strongly agree (n=54,292) 86% 14% Neutral/Disagree/Strongly disagree (n=8,974) Yet 68% of Students Take Developmental Education Percentage of community college students who take at least one developmental education class Source: Jaggars, S. & Stacey, G.W. (2014, January). What we know about developmental education outcomes. Retrieved from Community College Research Center website: http://ccrc.tc.columbia.edu/me dia/k2/attachments/what-we- know-about-developmental- education-outcomes.pdf Take at least one developmental class 68% 32%

Better Grades in High School Do Not Guarantee College Readiness Students’ self-reported high School GPAs indicate that there continues to be a gap between high school graduation requirements and college readiness Students Reporting Better High School GPAs Are Less Likely to Need Developmental Education – But the Need Is Still High My placement test scores indicated that I needed to take a developmental course (also referred to as basic skills, college prep, etc.). I needed a developmental course in at least one area I did not need any developmental courses Who Are These Respondents? Entering students who responded to the SENSE 2014 Promising Practices items (N=61,662) 86% Students’ self-reported high school GPA 40% 60% 54% 31% 59% 41% 68% 32% 69% 46% 70% 30% A A- to B+ B B- to C+ C C- or lower
