IPDA Steering Committee Meeting, CALTECH, 17-Jul-2007 Archiving Activities at Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) B Gopala Krishna Group Head, SPDCG Space Applications Centre (ISRO) Ahmedabad, India

IPDA Steering Committee Meeting, CALTECH, 17-Jul-2007 Chandrayaan-1 ISRO is launching it’s first satellite to moon called ‘Chandrayaan-1’ during April 2008 Objectives of the mission Chemical, mineralogical mapping of lunar surface in visible, low-energy and high-energy X-rays with high spatial resolution Specifically to carry out high resolution 3D mapping of topographic features along with the simultaneous mapping of distribution of minerals such as Si, Al, Mg, Ca and elemental chemical species including radioactive nuclides To create expertise in development of detectors and sensor technology for planetary remote sensing for future planetary exploration program

IPDA Steering Committee Meeting, CALTECH, 17-Jul-2007 Chandrayaan-1 Payloads Indian Payloads Terrain Mapping Camera (TMC) 5m spatial resolution, 20 km Swath (500-850 nm band) with three observation systems viz, fore, aft and nadir Hyper Spectral Imager (HySI) Operating at 400-950 nm band with a spectral resolution of 15 nm, spatial resolution of 80 m with swath 20 km. It has 64 channels, with central wave length shift 8 nm High Energy X-ray spectrometer (HEX) 20-250 keV spectrometer employing CdZnTe solid state detectors having a foot print of approx. 40 km Lunar Laser Ranging Instrument (LLRI) Having a topographic resolution of about 10 m Moon Impact Probe (MIP) A technology mission

IPDA Steering Committee Meeting, CALTECH, 17-Jul-2007 Chandrayaan-1 Payloads AO Payloads Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) JPL, NASA MiniSAR APL Infrared Spectrometer (SIR-2) Max Plank Institute/ESA Radiation Dose Monitor (RADOM) Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Sub-keV Atom Reflecting Analyser (SARA) Jointly by IRE, Sweden, SPL, India, ISAS/JAXA, Japan and VBE, Switzerland Low Energy X-Ray payload (CIXS) RAL, UK/ESA

IPDA Steering Committee Meeting, CALTECH, 17-Jul-2007 Indian Space Science Data Center (ISSDC) Indian Space Science Data Centre (ISSDC) is being set up at Bangalore, which is the custodian of all the science data from the Indian science missions To start with, Chandrayaan-1 is the first Indian planetary science mission, to use ISSDC as its archival and dissemination node As per the guidelines from Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) for Chandrayaan-1, PDS is to be followed for data archival and dissemination at ISSDC. This is to comply with the global standards for long term preservation of the data, maintain their usability and facilitate scientific community with the high quality data for their analysis.

IPDA Steering Committee Meeting, CALTECH, 17-Jul-2007 Data Products at ISSDC Basic data product levels (all instruments) at ISSDC are Level-0: Time tagged raw instrument data along with the ancillary information Level-1: Instrument calibration along with seleno referencing (wherever applicable) Higher levels: Instrument specific (limited) Dissemination is initially limited to the concerned PIs. Release to the other specific users after a lock-in period.

IPDA Steering Committee Meeting, CALTECH, 17-Jul-2007 Archival Philosophy at ISSDC All the payload data including Level-0 to be maintained as archive. For the Indian payloads PDS creation and archive preparation, validation and maintenance for all the levels will be carried out by ISSDC For AO payloads PIs will supply the processed data in PDS (including verification and validation) and ISSDC will archive the data For some of the AO payloads Level-0 PDS is to be generated by ISSDC for the archival (discussion point) Higher level product generation is carried out at Payload Operating Centers (POC), once validated it will be sent to ISSDC for archival The dissemination of the data products is in PDS, which will be carried out by ISSDC

IPDA Steering Committee Meeting, CALTECH, 17-Jul-2007 Archival Functions Provide basic functions Ingest and management of data sets and products Identification of products using metadata Ability to add, get and delete products from the archive Build a service that is accessible via clients using common programming languages (Java, C++, etc)

Presentation Layer Application Processing Layer System Layer This layer provides the packages / classes for user interface. Contains subsystems to perform core processing of the application. This layer has the packages / classes that are communicating to the database, files, network and operating system using APIs Archive Architecture layers

IPDA Steering Committee Meeting, CALTECH, 17-Jul-2007 Current Activities Initiated the PDS/PSA understanding with the help of ESA A two day interactive session between ISRO and ESA teams took place during Feb 2007 at PRL, Ahmedabad A detailed training is requested for August 2007 Document on Chandrayaan-1 data archive plan is being prepared

IPDA Steering Committee Meeting, CALTECH, 17-Jul-2007 Points for Discussion Level-0 PDS preparation issues International cooperation in implementation of PDS/PSA for the upcoming agencies for their future missions - modalities ISRO’s participation in development of global standards of planetary data archive through IPDA as well as in future IPDA projects – Contribution Availability of sample data sets from other missions for understanding
