2 Assumptions & Notes The analysis on the following pages uses ABC consumer magazine data and therefore is not necessarily reflective of the magazine market in its entirety. ABC data does not provide a complete picture of the market due to the overall number of magazines that audit in any given ABC release period and the consistency at which they do so. Constant Titles  Where reference to Constant Title data is made, with regards to this report, it is done so for magazines which have declared an ABC for each Jan-Jun period over the last 10 years. Excluded data  All ABC analysis will focus only on those magazines that have a UK Newstrade presence.  Therefore any magazine which has a wholly subscription, free or overseas circulation will be excluded as will any duplicate data.  Examples of duplicate data would be any regionally split sales that submit audits for each regional edition and also a national total, this would otherwise be double counting if both figures were included. Naming  Standard trade segment and sub-segment names have been used in the report rather than the Market Sector names in the release.  Additionally, where possible, magazine names commonly used in the trade are used rather than those in the ABC release.  Unless otherwise stated figures referred to in this report are for printed copy sales only – where digital sales are included these are referred to as Combined. 3 Total Circulation - Combined  This measure records sales in both printed format and digital copies combined.  The latest period saw figures released for 177 titles. Magazines that are wholly subscription, free or overseas circulation are excluded for this report (as are group certificates). This brings the count of titles down to 147.  It should be noted that these figures will not take into account any late releasing titles which means these figures will increase over the next few weeks.  Of the 147 titles there are 99 that are considered Constant Titles.  Of these 99 titles 29 are in growth year-on-year and 40 show no worse than a 4% decline.  Year-on-year Total Combined Circulation for Constant Titles has fallen 5.0% which is in line with the 5.8% & 5.1% declines seen the last two last year. 3

4 Total Circulation - Printed  Year-on-year Total Printed Circulation for Constant Titles has fallen 5.1%.  This fall continues the recent trend with all nine of the year-on-year measures shown being declines.  The same view at Segment level shows a mixed picture with year-on-year changes varying from -2.5% to -27.4%.  Of the 147 UK Newstrade titles submitting an ABC, 99 are classified as Constant Titles (i.e. have submitted a figure for each of the last 10 Jan-Jun periods).  Looking at title level there are 26 titles in growth year-on-year when looking at printed copy sales – three less than when digital copies are also included.  40 titles show no worse than a 3.5% decline. 4

5 UK Newstrade - Printed  Year-on-year UK Printed Newstrade for Constant Titles has fallen 7.3%.  Of the titles with a UK Newstrade year-on-year figure, almost one in five are in growth (18 from 99).  Nine of the Top 20 Risers show a growth of at least 10% (see page 6).  Five segments are represented in the Top 20 Risers; ten titles are in Children’s Magazines, seven are from Women’s Interest and one each from Computing, Home Interest and Men’s Fashion/Interest.  All of the Top 20 Risers have UK Newstrade average issue figures in excess of 10k and 17 in excess of 30k - this shows there are good sized titles performing well. 5

8 Subscription Performance - Printed  Total Printed Subscriptions for Constant Titles are down 5.5%  This is the fifth consecutive decline shown in this measure.  Total Subscriptions sees two segments show growth for Constant Titles. A further two show declines of less than 2%.  Total Subscriptions’ share of Total Circulation is calculated as 17.3% for all titles and 18.7% for Constant Titles (see page 12).  Of the 10 segments to have titles included in this latest ABC release, eight have at least 10% of their Total Printed Circulation coming from this category and three have in excess of 50%. 8

9 Overseas Circulation Performance - Printed  The year-on-year change for Overseas Printed Circulation Constant Titles is down 9.2%.  Overseas Circulation contributes 4.1% to the overall Total Printed Circulation but this is substantially more for certain segments.  The following all have at least 10% of their Total Printed Circulation from this category; Trade & Professional (49.7%), Music (45.8%), Computing (20.9%), Motoring & Motorcycling (13.6%), Leisure Interests (12.4%) and Teenage Magazines (12.2%).  27 titles have at least 10% of their Total Printed Circulation coming from this category. With 117 titles posting an Overseas Circulation, this means almost one in four audited titles with a figure in this area have at least 10% coming from this category.  15% of those with an Overseas Circulation, 17 titles, have 15% or more of their Total Printed Circulation from this category. 9

10 Digital Circulation  The year-on-year change for Digital Circulation is up 1.8%.  Four years ago the Total Digital figure sat at 162k, this is now 317k – almost double.  The number of titles to release a Digital Circulation in this period is 78 titles.  This means approximately half the titles in the audit recorded a Digital Circulation (78 from 147).  The digital market has a far higher share of Combined Overseas Circulation (12.1%) than of the UK/RoI equivalent (1.2%).  Six segments see at least 5% of their Combined Circulation coming from this category; Computing, Leisure Interests, Men’s Fashion/Interests, Motoring & Motorcycling, News & Current Affairs and Trade & Professional. 10

11 ABC Topline Performance - Combined  It can be clearly seen that the number of titles submitting an audit has continued to decrease over the last few Jan-Jun releases (shown by the black line).  Comparing the number of UK Newstrade titles to that from 10 years ago shows this has dropped to 54% of the number it was (down from 275 to 147).  Three of the other measures displayed have decreased to the same sort of degree, the notable exceptions being Total Subscriptions which has held up more at 66% and Overseas Newstrade which has come down to 36%.  For 99 Constant Titles the indexed figures are;  Total Subscriptions : 89%  Total Combined Circulation : 64%  Total Printed Circulation : 63%  UK Newstrade : 56%  Overseas Newstrade : 53% 11

12 Share of ABC Totals - Combined  The above shows the Total Combined Circulation figure split into five categories and shows the share they represent for each of the last five Jan-Jun periods.  Two categories gain share on this audit compared to the previous Jan-Jun; Digital Circulation (up 0.1%) and Other (up 1.6%).  The share contributed by UK Newstrade has marginally decreased year-on-year and now contributes 71.2% (compared to 72.2%) and Overseas Newstrade contributed 3.2%.  Changing this measure to Constant Titles only sees the share held by Total Subscriptions increase significantly from 17.2% to 18.7%.  Digital Circulation also increases (2.0% compared to 1.7%). 12
