Montgomery Senior Squadron Introduction to Crew Resource Management January 2012

What is Crew Resource Management? Why it’s important…. How to we do it? Objective

ORM CRM The ORM process allows systematic risk decision- making that manages risk as part of the whole operation, reduces mishaps and improves the cost- benefit ratio by lowering risk. The end result is that we are safer, our resources are conserved and our operational capability is optimized. ORM CRM The ORM process allows systematic risk decision- making that manages risk as part of the whole operation, reduces mishaps and improves the cost- benefit ratio by lowering risk. The end result is that we are safer, our resources are conserved and our operational capability is optimized. CRM is a primary component of the flight operation phase & the element we as air crews, are primarily responsible for managing. ORM= Operational Risk Management

The Six Steps of the ORM Process 1. Identify the hazards 2. Assess the risks 3. Analyze the risk control measures 4. Make control decisions 5. Risk control implementation 6. Supervise and review Where might Crew Resource Management fit into the overall Risk Management Process?

An Air Crew is a Team of Individuals Working Together to Accomplish a Mission PilotMSMO Crew Resource Management is the process by which we effectively manage human assets to safely & effectively achieve mission goals.

How do we measure CRM? And you’ll be asked during Debriefing at the end of every mission

It all begins with you each of us Flight Fitness | The "I’m Safe" Checklist Do I have an illness or any symptoms of an illness? Have I been taking prescription or over-the-counter drugs? Am I under psychological pressure from the job? Worried about financial matters, health problems or family discord? Have I been drinking within eight hours? Within 24 hours? Am I tired and not adequately rested? Am I adequately nourished? I IllnessIllness M MedicationMedication S StressStress A AlcoholAlcohol F FatigueFatigue E EatingEating Before each and every flight

Good, you’re safe, but are you prepared ? Do you have a ‘go to war’ bag and is it organized? 11 Components of Crew Resource Management for CAP How do we ‘break’ the failure chain of events? Situational Awareness Situational Awareness Barriers to Communication Barriers to Communication Task Saturation Task Saturation Crew Assignments & Du ties Crew Assignments & Du ties

How do we maintain SA? Situational Awareness Situational Awareness Knowing what’s going on around you at all times- Being alert & focused Attentive to the Task at hand & to your duty Asking questions, challenging ideas, seek feedback

How do we lose it? Loss of Situational Awareness Sudden change of events, crisis or distraction Sudden change of events, crisis or distraction Through the strength of an “idea; strong even when there is information contrary to the idea. Through the strength of an “idea; strong even when there is information contrary to the idea. Having a hidden agenda Having a hidden agenda Complacency Complacency Accommodation Accommodation Sudden loss of judgment Sudden loss of judgment Confusion, Fear, Sensory Overload, Macho, Resignation, Anti-authoritarian behavior, Get-there-itis

How do we overcome loss of SA? Regaining Situational Awareness  Reduce workload immediately, suspend the mission, climb to avoid terrain & go into a stabilized flight profile. Listen to your gut; “Knock it off” or “Abort” Listen to your gut; “Knock it off” or “Abort” Sterile cockpit Sterile cockpit Remember your training!

How do we ‘break’ the failure chain of events? Barriers to Communication Establish communication protocols as part of pre-flight Establish communication protocols as part of pre-flight Remember that you’re part of a team, pilot & crew alike must communicate effectively regardless of rank, age, experience or position. Use of personal respect & professional courtesy are good ways of dealing with those ‘special’ personalities. 16 How do we ‘break’ the failure chain of events? Task Saturation Sensory Overload; too much information or unanticipated change for pilot or crew to accommodate- could result from in-flight emergency, convergence of multiple distractions, a weather event, equipment failures, etc. Sensory Overload; too much information or unanticipated change for pilot or crew to accommodate- could result from in-flight emergency, convergence of multiple distractions, a weather event, equipment failures, etc. Be aware of Air Crew ‘tunnel vision’ and stress level Be aware of Air Crew ‘tunnel vision’ and stress level Back off & call a ‘time out’, regroup, stabilize the situation, re-organize tasks and then move forward.

How do we ‘break’ the failure chain of events? Reassess Available Resources Identify your available resources; can the issues be resolved through a radio call to Mission Base, Flight Service or another A/c? May some of the overload or mission responsibilities be transferred to another crew member? May some of the overload or mission responsibilities be transferred to another crew member? A bouncing aircraft is a bad place to have to review the Mart, but are must carry one in order to reference it. 18 How do we ‘break’ the failure chain of events? Crew Assignments & Du ties As per CAP 60-3, all flights-related duties are conducted under the supervision of an aircraft commander, however mission-related duties may be conducted under a properly trained Observer. The key is that positive delegation of monitoring duties are as important as positive delegation of flying duties. Knowledge of your and mission job duties throughout each phase of the flight, again here is key.

How do we ‘break’ the failure chain of events? Crew Assignments & Du ties As PIC, MO or MS knowledge and performance of your job duties throughout each phase of the flight, from pre- flight, start-up, takeoff to landing is critical. Knowledge of other crew responsibilities are a bonus. Thing ahead of the task at hand, what should come next? Anticipate…. If something doesn’t look right, Thing ahead of the task at hand, what should come next? Anticipate…. If something doesn’t look right, ASK!

How do we ‘break’ the failure chain of events? Crew Assignments & Duties Know your mission, know your job! All flights begin : All flights begin with a briefing to crew: Do you show up prepared with charts, forms, tools, ready to copy? Do you show up prepared with charts, forms, tools, ready to copy? Even if you’re not PIC you need to know the game plan, take notes! Even if you’re not PIC you need to know the game plan, take notes! After the brief, if you PIC does not discuss you’re airborne operational After the brief, if you PIC does not discuss you’re airborne operational plan & what is expected of you, now is a the time to ask.
