Wireless Networks Projects Roberto Riggio, PhD CREATE-NET Via Alla Cascata 56/c 38123, Povo (TN) roberto.riggio@create-net.org

Project 1: Secure data aggregation in Hybrid Mesh/Sensor networks ● Sensor nodes: tiny devices with limited resources in terms of storage, power, and processing ● Requirement: ● Reduction of the amount of transmitted data ● Security and Privacy ● Solution: ● Hybrid network architecture combining WSNs with WMNs – Sensor nodes use their resources (i.e. their power) for sensing and encrypting – Mesh nodes perform the secure aggregation of the encrypted data and relay the aggregated data to the Sink ● End-to-end data aggregation model by: – C. Castelluccia, E. Mykletun, and G. Tsudik, “Efficient aggregation of encrypted data in wireless sensor networks,” in Proc. of MobiQuitous San Diego, CA, USA, 2005.

Project 2: IEEE 802.11 MAC modeling using ZigZag decoding ● Consider some early model on the modeling of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol ● Based on fixed point approach theory ● Extend the model considering the performance improvement of ZigZag decoding: ● Gollakota, S. and Katabi, D. 2008. Zigzag decoding: combating hidden terminals in wireless networks. SIGCOMM Comput. Commun. Rev. 38, 4 (Oct. 2008), 159-170. ● Possible outcome: ● Conference paper ● Journal letter ● Master thesis

Project 3: Wireless Channel Emulator ● Develop an emulation component which can reproduce the effect of a wireless link on live traffic ● Emulate the IEEE 802.11 DCF model ● Min/Max physical transmission rates ● S/N ratio, as it affects the rate selection algorithm and the error rateNnumbers of active clients, as it affects the delay in accessing the media, and also the available share of bandwidth ● Applications: ● Experiments replicability ● Different experiments can run concurrently with different (emulated) network conditions

Project 4: Rate control in IEEE 802.11n Wireless LANs ● The 11n amendment enhanced the standard MAC by adding support for frame aggregation ● Improves MAC service time by reducing both protocol header and contention mechanism overhead ● Problem: ● Real channel conditions are not error-free ● Packets are lost due to collision and transmission errors ● Solutions: ● Run time computation of the optimal aggregated frame length based on measurable metrics ● Exploit the same metric also for rate control ● Performance model: ● G. Bianchi, IEEE 802.11 – Saturation throughput analysis, IEEE Communications Letters, vol. 2, no. 12, pp. 318-320, Dec. 1998.
