Ecosystems B2a(i)

POP QUIZ ● What is meant by the terms HABITAT and COMMUNITY? (2) ● Identify a natural and an artificial ecosystem (2) ● Identify an unexplored ecosystem and give the reasons for this (2) ● What is meant by the terms ECOSYSTEM and POPULATION? (2) ● What are the main differences between natural and artificial ecosystems? (3)

OBJECTIVES GRADE G-E ● Recall and be able to apply the terms habitat and community. ● Identify natural and artificial ecosystems. ● GRADE D-C ● Identify still unexplored ecosystems and the reasons for this. ● Recall and use the terms ecosystem and population. ● GRADE B-A* ● Describe and discuss differences between natural and artificial ecosystems.

TASK Compare two different ecosystems. Try to cover the following points about each ecosystem.  The name of the ecosystem.  Plants found growing there.  Animals that live there.  Is the ecosystem artificial or natural?  Are any of the animals or plants found in both ecosystems?  Are any of the animals or plants found in only one ecosystem?  If so, suggest reasons why these animals and plants live in only one type of ecosystem.  Is the ecosystem normally hot or cold?  Is there much water available?  Would it be easy for humans to explore the ecosystem? If not, why not?  Could there be animals living in the ecosystem that we know nothing about? Now look at the information you have produced – summarise the main differences between the two ecosystems ONE ECOSYSTEM MUST BE A WHEAT FIELD

ANSWERS ● HABITAT – Where an organism lives (1) ● COMMUNITY – All the animals and plants in an ecosystem (1) ● Natural – woodland, forest, ocean, etc. (1) ● Artificial – Aquarium, wheat field, fish farm (1) ● Oceans – pressure too high for us to survive without technology (1) ● ECOSYSTEM – A group of living things and their environment (1) ● POPULATION – A group of animals or plants of the same species (1) ● Natural ecosystems have a bigger variety of organisms (more biodiversity) and do not contain chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides or fertilisers (3) G = 1 F = 2 E = 3 D = 5 C = 6 B = 8 A = 9 A* = 10

OBJECTIVES GRADE G-E ● Recall and be able to apply the terms habitat and community. ● Identify natural (woodland and lake) and artificial (greenhouse and aquarium/ fish farm) ecosystems. ● GRADE D-C ● Apply knowledge of organisms to explain why they are often restricted to certain habitats. ● Recall that some ecosystems, such as many ocean depths, are still unexplored, with possible undiscovered new species. ● Recall and use the terms ecosystem and population. ● GRADE B-A* ● Describe and discuss differences between natural and artificial ecosystems (limited to biodiversity and use of weed killers, pesticides and fertilisers). z
