Collection Development and Management Committee meeting October 17, 2007 Orbis Cascade Alliance

Committee Motto (with a nod to Tip O’Neill) “Think consortially, collect locally.”

Views of Our Collections CDMC thinks of our library collections as one very large collection, geographically dispersed. Our users see it that way! The Alliance Council sees it that way too.

EC Recommendation EC will recommend that Council adopt the following collection development vision statement for inclusion in the Alliance web site and strategic agenda: “ As an Alliance, we consider the combined collections of member institutions as one collection. While member institutions continue to acquire their own material, the Alliance is committed to cooperative collection development to leverage member institutions’ resources to better serve our users.”

Positive Conditions Conditions in place to succeed in developing and managing library collections cooperatively: Excellent online union catalog, Summit Patron-initiated requesting—ease of the user Efficient processing of Summit requests—ease of the staff Efficient courier delivery system Load balancing creates equity Solid history of library cooperation

Move Beyond Traditional Now we can move beyond traditional cooperative collection development agreements: Area studies, e.g. Canadiana/Africana Programmatic strengths, e.g. veterinary medicine/diesel technology. Harder to make agreements when every library needs books in American history and English literature.

The New Co-op Our new tools allow us to work cooperatively: one book at a time

Meeting Local Demand We will always buy books wanted by local users. Good reason for lots of copies: The world is flat : a brief history of the twenty-first century by Thomas L. Friedman. 64 copies 2 audiobooks

Strength by Cooperation But we also buy many general academic books that round out our collections. By working together we can accomplish two things: Buy fewer unnecessary duplicates Buy more titles overall to increase the pool of available works

Why YBP YBP was selected to provide the best consortial tools to partner with Alliance libraries to further cooperative collecting goals:  Approval plans based on a profile of needs— o Send books or slips for consideration—now electronic o Work with individual selectors to profile interests  Maintain database to use for firm orders  Share ordering decisions among consortial partners

YB also: Gives selectors data about how many copies will be available in Summit before order records or catalog records hit the catalog.

We Are Not Alone: We are not the only consortium working on a project like this: OhioLINK Colorado Wisconsin

Thank You
