4.  Cystic fibrosis is caused by a defective gene which causes the body to produce abnormally thick and sticky fluid, called mucus. This mucus builds up in the breathing passages of the lungs and in the pancreas, the organ that helps to break down and absorb food.  Most children with are diagnosed by age 2. A small number, however, are not diagnosed until age 18 or older. These patients usually have a milder form of the disease.

6.  In the 1950s few children with cystic fibrosis lived to go to elementary school. Today in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with Cystic fibrosis. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond.
