6. Allegory: a story in which “abstract ideas and principles are described in terms of characters, figures and events”; essentially, a symbolic story Makes characters multi- dimensional, gives layers of meaning to a work, allows authors to push an agenda (moral and/or political)

7. Pre-reading: Think of the text in context (historical, author’s past, literary movement(s), etc.) Make predictions – what you think the text will be about While reading, annotate! Circle repetitive themes or images (motifs) Circle words you don’t know – look them up or ask in class!
