Where does Glastonbury festival take place? On the next few slides you will see maps of various scales, from large (national scale) to small (local scale). At the end, you will end up with a set of sentences accurately describing the location of the festival. There is a word box on each slide to help you.

How did you do? You should have 4 sentences describing the location of Glastonbury Festival and if you put them together, they should look something like this… ‘Glastonbury festival is located in the UK, in the South West of England. It’s in the County of Somerset, close to the cities of Bath and Bristol and the towns of Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet. Bristol Airport and the M5 motorway are close. It’s just outside the village of Pilton, near some rivers and close to the main roads of the A37 and A361. The festival is held in a rural area, on gently sloping farmland around Worthy Farm.’

The Festival In 2008, 134,000 weekend tickets were sold, 6,000 Sunday passes and 37,500 crew/performer/stew- ard/trader passes were given out. Tickets cost £155 The first festival was in 1970 and was organised by site owner and farmer Michael Eavis, at Worthy Farm. It was attended by 1,500 people who each paid £1 and got free milk from the farm. Today, Glastonbury Festival is huge… Mika performing at Glastonbury in 2007 Image © Mark Crossfield, Wikimedia Commons and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Licence.

Why here? Very much like the location of settlements, the Site and Situation of a festival is important Do you know what these terms mean? Site = the features and characteristics of the actual point at which the settlement (or festival!) is located Situation = refers to the location of the settlement (or festival!) in relation to its surroundings – things like communications, other settlements, rivers, relief For the rest of the lesson we will be looking at the features of the site and situation of Glastonbury.

In pairs complete the table below. You will need to look at 2 different maps from the resource sheet
