Your Role as Officers Immediately inform the SAPR Rep (VA or SARC), Set the tone in our units – support those involved in the case Neutrality – don’t take sides in the case Handle the dynamics arising from the aftermath of a report Do not investigate the report (investigating can actually be harmful to the case) Facilitate the legal, administrative and investigative processes regarding the accuser and the accused Provide access to the resources, but do not take an active role in investigating or administrating anything – you are there for support and to continue to lead your unit

4. Setting a Supportive Command Climate Establish that sexual harassment and sexual assault will not be tolerated in your unit This includes stopping jokes or pranks that are inappropriate for the workplace - remember the continuum of harm Share the resources available for help with your unit, and support the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response programs, staff, and trainings Understand how to report and who to report to if approached by someone in your unit about an assault Support the survivors of sexual assault when they report, as well as support the accused if they are in your unit Take what a survivor says at face value, help them and provide them with the necessary resources Do not take sides Foster an environment where those in your unit can come to you for help if, and when, they need to

Restricted Reporting Support and assistance available Medical care Forensic evidence collection Counseling Advocacy No investigation into incident reported No identifying information about victim revealed To ensure a restricted report option, only certain designated people can be disclosed to: Anyone in the SAPR Office (SARCs, Victim Advocates, etc.) Counselors Health Care Personnel Chaplains – will not make a report unless victim goes to SARC/VA Ref: DoD Instruction 6495.02
