3  Get your paddle board and marker ready.  Follow my directions to build each spelling word.  Town  Which letter do I change to make this word become “down”?  Continue with suggestions in book.

6  Bargain – If you didn’t have to pay much to buy something good, you got a bargain.  What’s the word?  Bargain  Would you be getting a bargain if you paid $5.00 for a candy bar that normally costs 50 cents? Explain.

7  Spoiled – If you spoiled something, you damaged or ruined it.  What’s the word?  spoiled  Is a torn shirt spoiled? Explain.

8  Comfortable – When you are comfortable, you feel good just as you are.  What’s the word?  comfortable  Would you be comfortable sitting on a soft chair? Explain.

9  Boost – If you give someone a boost, you lift him or her up to reach something.  What’s the word?  Boost  Would you need a boost to touch the ceiling? Explain.

10  Exchanged – When you exchanged things, you gave something to someone and you got something in return.  What’s the word?  Exchanged  Have you exchanged money for something else? Explain.

11  Delivered – If you deliver something, you take it from one place and bring it to another.  What’s the word?  Delivered  What kinds of things might be delivered to our school?

12  Read the passage on pages 164 – 165.  (read aloud and stop on 164) 1. Was the bargain advertised in the shop window a good one? Explain. 2. What was delivered just in time for the sale? 3. What did Taylor think spoiled the shoes?

13 4. Why do you think Mom had to boost Taylor up? 5. How would comfortable shoes feel on your feet? Would they feel tight or could you wiggle your toes in them? 6. What did Mom exchange to get new shoes for Taylor?

15  Good readers use strategies to help them understand and remember what they read.  Think about the characters, setting, problem, important events, and solution.  We can use a story map as we read the story to remember these facts.  Start on page 166.

17  The girl was industrious because she worked hard at the diner after school.  industrious – If you are industrious, you are hard-working.  What’s the word?  industrious  Industrious workers make sure to get their work done. Would you be an industrious worker if you worked hard or if you were lazy? Explain.

18  Think of someone you know who is thrifty.  Tell how you know the person is thrifty.  Think of someone you know who is industrious.  Tell how you know the person is industrious.
