2 Why learn another language? 1. Open Up a World of Job Opportunities: Increasing world trade and diplomatic relationship. 2. Give Your Brain a Boost: Improve memory, cognition, longer attention span. 3. Establish Deep Connections and Cross-Cultural Friendships: 4. Become More Interesting and Meet More Interesting People: 5. Become a Better Learner: The first 2 nd language is the hardest 6. Become more logical: Reasoning in a 2 nd language is more fact and logic based than emotion based. 7. Enjoy entertainment and arts in the original language: A lot (especially the nuances in expression) is lost in translation 8. Expand your world view: 9. Improve scores: A second language improves your skills and grades in math and English and on the SAT and GRE 10. Improves confidence: I can do it.

3 Why Hindi? Language of your heritage Language of the present Understand Hindi movies Talk to parents and relatives Don’t be a “foreigner” in India 5 th largest number of speakers in the world ALL Indian languages together come in at #2 If you learn Hindi it is easier to learn other Indian languages. Who knows? One day you might be headed to India for “overseas” job experience.

5 Levels of Instruction Four Levels – based on a combination of grade and proficiency Level 1: Grades 1 and 2. Meets in Room 201. Section A (Grade 1): Meets in 201 Section B (Grade 2): Meets in 202 Level 2: Grades 3 and 4. Meets in Room 203. Would like to break this into 2 levels if teachers are available Level 3: Grades 5 and 6. Meets in Room 204. Level 4: Grades 7 and 8. Meets in Room 205. Students to be moved up based on their proficiency

7 Curriculum Goals – Level 1A LevelCurriculum 1A Introduce themselves and ask for introduction in Hindi. e.g. name, age, parents information, grade Have a vocabulary of at least 100 words, including the following Objects – Fruits, vegetables, furniture, etc. Parts of the body Colors Numbers – 1-to 10 Introduction to Hindi ‘Varnamala’ Know the difference between the Hindi sentence construction and English sentence construction Recognize the alphabets and know their sounds Identify vowels and consonants Play games like Uno, Sam says, snakes and ladders in Hindi Books + Teaching Aids Required: 1.“Learn Hindi Writing Activity Workbook”, Dinesh Verma, Chanda Books. 2.Hindi Flash Cards (Amazon) 3.Teacher’s Notes

9 Curriculum Goals – Level 2 LevelCurriculum 2 Re-emphasize Level 1 skills Read all alphabets. Read all consonant + vowel construction Write (computer aided if that makes it easier) – words Have a vocabulary of at least 500 words Have a conversation of at least 4 sentences. ‘Read’ a short paragraph of 8-12 sentences and answer in English questions on comprehension or select the right multiple choice answer given in Hindi. Conversation topics: 3-4 sentences in topics and scenarios such as about themselves name, age, grade, siblings when meeting grandparents when going to India how to order in restaurant few sentences about school Books + Teaching Aids Required: 1.“Learn Hindi Writing Activity Workbook”, Dinesh Verma, Chanda Books. 2.Teacher’s Notes

10 Curriculum Goals – Level 3 LevelCurriculum 3Reading Proficiency at reading all alphabets and consonant+vowel construction Writing Write Hindi words in long hand Write Hindi sentences with hand or computer aided. Verbal Have a conversation of at least 8 sentences. Read a short paragraph of 8-12 sentences and answer in Hindi questions on comprehension Vocabulary Have a vocabulary of at least 1000 words Books + Teaching Aids Required: 1.“Learn Hindi Vocabulary Activity Workbook”, Dinesh Verma, Chanda Books. 2.Teacher’s Notes

11 Curriculum Goals – Level 4 LevelCurriculum 4Reading Read paragraphs from a childrens’ Hindi magazine Writing Write 4-8 sentences in Hindi in long hand. Construct an 8-12 sentence paragraph in Hindi using the computer to write in Hindi. Verbal Be able to turn on the news (on the web) and give a gist of the conversation Be able to converse in Hindi for 12-16 sentences. Short sentences are just fine. Vocabulary Have a vocabulary of 1500 words. Books Required: Teacher’s Notes (Student must have a copy of Hindi alphabets)

12 Parent Involvement One word: V-O-L-U-N-T-E-E-R Each parent must sign up for at least once for their student’s class. Spend the time with your child: We have only 75 minutes with your child every week. You have the rest Take language education seriously Things to do Create an environment where Hindi is heard Hindi movies, songs, TV programs Talk to your child in Hindi Talk to each other in Hindi Play vocabulary games; go to ‘Teach-Yourself Hindi websites’ Play Hindi-speak: Convert English sentences to Hindi word order: e.g. ‘What is your name?’ becomes ‘Your name what is?’

15 Parent Volunteers Success depends on parents Looking for a few energetic volunteers: 2 volunteers in each level. 1 Active Support – required every class 1 Backup – Be in as many classes as possible. Must be available as backup.

17 Expectations Regular Attendance is required You hurt only yourself by missing classes Punctuality is essential You inconvenience others if you are not punctual Bring following items to classroom 1 notebook dedicated for Hindi Notes A Couple of sharpened pencils Eraser/Sharpener Homework: Complete all homework.
